Harper?

DH and I are loving the name Harper for a boy. I know it is "gender neutral" but I'm just wondering what your thoughts on it are? Too girly for a little boy? Or is it ok? We both love the vintage feel of the name.

Re: Harper?

  • These days, it's ALL girl to me. Even if it is originally a boy name, I could never use it on a boy nowadays.  And I'd actually side eye someone who did use it on a boy. It's just so on trend right now to use for girls.

  • It is ranked at #605 for boys and has jumped almost 400 spots for boys in the past 6 years despite the girl trend. That is over 400 boys last year. It may not be as popular as it is for girls, but it is still being used steadily and is increasing.

I am all for using boy names on boys, even when parents are using them for girls (Riley, Rowan, Rory, Reese/Rhys, Avery, Elliott, Emerson...). Fight back. The only way names will stay up for boys is if people keep using them.

That said, I am just not a fan of Harper for a boy or a girl at all. It is just fine for a boy.

  • I like it for a girl. You can "fight back" to make it a boys name if you want but people are probably going to think it's a girls name for quite some time still.

  • I think it's gone to the girls which is so weird to me since I don't think it sounds very pretty at all.

I think it is odd too, it seems like a pretty masculine name but oh well!

  • I know it may technically be unisex but I've only ever heard it on a girl and these days it's a pretty trendy girl name so he would probably be the only boy Harper he comes across. That would be a deal breaker for me.

  • So far I've only heard it on girls but I agree it does seem more masculine. I'm not a huge fan of it on either sex either though; the whole last name as first names trend is overdone IMO.

  • I think it is super trendy and dislike it for either sex. Its a last name. And even though I dont find it feminine, I've only seen this used on girls so I think most would assume he was a girl based on the name.
  • I don't care for this name for either sex but I actually know one baby boy named Harper and TONS of girls.

  • It is DHs first choice for a girl... While I am not sure yet about that, it definitely screams GIRL to me these days.
