need help - money saving tips anyone?

hello ladies!
I know I havent posted in a while but I need all the help I can get. I have decided to stay home with our little one but we also just bought a house. without dipping into our tiny nest egg of a savings account too much, do any of you smart ladies have any budget saving tips for around the house? i have never been stingy in my life - if anything, DH and I have always been somewhat frivolous.

any help is greatly appreciated!!

Re: need help - money saving tips anyone?

  • I decided to quit my teaching job to stay home with my son and we definitely had to make some budget cuts.  I decided to take on a work from home job that has helped a ton.  Also, we don't have cable TV and we have cut down on how much we eat out!

Another thing that has helped is meal planning!

  • When we had DS#1, I went back to work part-time, so we lost about half my salary. I buy generic when possible, esp diapers. We use target brand, it definitely adds up. I meal plan and try to use leftovers which took some getting used to. For example, if we have subs one night, I use the rolls for garlic bread with pasta later in the week. If we have chicken I try to use the leftovers for chicken salad, or something.

  • Call your cable, internet, gas, car insurance and other service providers and ask about if they can offer you any sort of discount on your rates. If they say no then you can usually get them to give in if you say you were thinking about switching to company X because they are offering a better deal. Most providers want to keep you as a customer.

Clip coupons. Shop using your grocery store circular and shop multiple stores if one has a great deal that another one doesn't. Always meal plan and limit snack foods and miscellanious items.

Dump cable and use Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon Prime.

Use Amazon Prime and Amazon Mom for your baby stuff and other essentials.

Consider joining Costco or Sams Club. We get our formula at Costco. 17 for a huge canister.

Find a nice consignment shop near you and buy LO's clothes and toys there. You can get almost brand new stuff for super cheap.

That's all I've got off the top of my head!

This!! DH is like a master of coupons and checking the weekly store circulars. We also don't really buy any junk food. We joke around that if someone looked at our fridge they would think we were poor and starving cause by the end of the week almost everything we've bought is gone. We're major meal planners.

  • Resale shops rock.

I don't have cable, just internet and Netflix.

I use vinegar and water for a cleaning solution. It's super cheap that way!

I buy tp and paper towels from Big Lots. A lot of people use reusable/unpaper towels to save money, as well.

This is going to sound silly, but I make my baby wipes last. If one single wipe didn't do the job, but the mess isn't huge, I tear one in half. It actually adds up, ridiculous as it sounds. (I haven't made any reusable yet, which is my plan).  I do the same thing with drier sheets.

Consider cloth diapering, or buying cheap/generic.

Don't be afraid to try different brands if you have a coupon that will make it cheaper than what you normally buy.

Then there are commonly known things like turning off lights when not in use / using natural light, as well as turning off the water while brushing your teeth, etc.

If I think of more, I'll post more Wink I've always been a cheapskate... and often been kinda poor lol

  • Online shopping!  It's amazing how much you can purchase, even foodwise that is cheaper than the grocery store.  Walmart.com has free shipping over $45, or Amazon is great (we just signed up for Amazon prime).  And for coupons, many grocery stores have online coupons that you can add to your store card with just a click instead of clipping.  I do it for Safeway and Fred Meyer.

Our biggest household expense was heating during the winter.  So we purchased a few space heaters-the ones in the wooden box that are not hot to the touch.  So we just heat the rooms we're using.  There is an extra expense with the purchase and a little more electricity, but our main source of heat was fueled by propane which is really expensive.

Everyone seems to have the latest smart phone, and those plans are expensive.  DH and I don't have a smart phone, so no expensive plans.

Consider take out instead of eating out.  You save on drinks and tip.

Wal-Mart / T-Mobile has a cheap iPhone plan if you already own the phone. Unlimited texting and data for like, $30-something. Of course, it's more expensive if you are buying the phone with the plan.

  • I just left my job last week. One thing we are doing for July is to see if we canget by without my car. If we can, we will sell my car and save the amount of the car payment plus insurance each month....we are also not allowing my 16yo to get his license for a while yet. We dont have a lot of expenses, just the medical from ds birth and a couple others. Those few medical are killing our finances though because of the way they are billed. I told dh, if they cant get our bills down to one payment then Im going to find us different medical providers that have a better billing department.

We use cloth diapers and we buy store brands for pretty much everything. We dont use a lot of coupons since we have found the store brands to be less expensive than the name brands with the coupons and we dont eat a lot of the processed foods.

  • Oh, and I hang laundry outside

We also do not have tv or cable or satellite.

We have 5 cell phones on our plan currently and we will be talking to service provider to see if additional ways to cut phone bill in addition to dropping down to 1 smartphone from 2.

I will second cloth diapers/wipes, they're adorable, environmentally smart, and save you thousands. Especially if you line dry when you can. Also cutting out cable, junk food, and do meal planning. We keep ourselves busy with free entertainment, seeing what's going on in the community for free, and going to the library.

  • I would love to know too!
  • One thing I might suggest is on Facebook there are a ton of mommy trade and resale groups. They usually are chunked up by area so you'll be able to find people nearby. Sometimes people sell boxes of clothes for 5 or swings, toys, bottles...it's a good way for you to get rid of some of your extras too.

Clip coupons, thing to yourself if you REALLY need all the luxuries in your life and cut out what you don't
