A glass of wine?

I was curious since most of us are in our third trimester. Have any of you had or have had a glass of wine lately? I've heard one glass is okay I do not know how far apart these glasses must be but it's not like I'm going to go on a drinking binge. I'd just like to relax like before with a nice glass of wine at the end of the day. A cold glass of moscato with some chopped up strawberries would be the best rite meow!

Re: A glass of wine?

  • Many doctors say a small glass as a rare treat is fine, but it's just so taboo that I can't bring myself to do it, even though I've been craving it like crazy. I let myself have one or two sips of my hubby's wine when he occasionally has a glass but that's it.
  • I'm totally fine with it personally. I just don't love wine haha. There was an interesting study that came out concluding that moderate wine and beer intake did not poorly affect kids over the first 7 years of life and even helped them mentally.

  • I agree.  Its just taboo in the US which is a shame.  My husband and I had fully planned that I would continue to enjoy wine throughout my pregnancy but alas, we did not get pregnant easily and were on our fifth insemination - next stop IVF by the time it finally happened.  Due to our struggles, I figured I couldn't take even moderate drinking as a possibility.  I sometimes think maybe during my next pregnancy because I hate buying into the stigma, but we shall see if it was just primary infertility or if we'll have a part II - secondary infertility.  I've had no other problems this pregnancy (no GD, no contractions, no high blood pressure, etc) so I know I would have been fine with a glass of wine a couple nights a week to relax.  Enjoy.  I'm kinda jealous.

I've also read about how it can be a helpful mental stimulation for the little one. Hence why I was curious. I suppose ill ask my doctor in this coming Fridays visit. I'm a totally healthy mommy to be no high blood pressure, passed all my glucose test. Everything is good in my health department. So will see what she says.
  • I heard a little bit is okay but for me personally I just haven't. I was craving a class of wine so bad though for a couple months and even when I was offered a sip I didn't want to.. Just cause there really is not enough evidence to how much alcohol will make an effect and I seem to consider my toothpaste and mouth wash and hand sanitizer as alcohol into my blood stream.. I know sounds silly lol! But I also got diagnosed with GD so I don't think it would be a good idea for me! You should see what your doctor says, he may think its absolutely fine to indulge in a very small glass every now and again! Which I'm sure would make you feel better doing so if your doc says its fine!!
  • I probably had 3 or 4 drinks wine or beer during my first pregnancy and double that in my second including the few I had in my last few weeks on doctors orders because of so many false labor contractions.

This time around I've been on antibiotics nearly my entire pregnancy for sinus and gum infections, so I've had very little... But as I understand it, even up to 3 or 4 glasses of wine a month is fine during pregnancy!

  • I would have a glass of wine if I wanted it but I just don't like wine. I really miss my weekend vodka and redbull drinks though.

  • Yep. I do. A glass a week. Usually on a Saturday night. Sometimes I'll have a beer instead, just depending on my mood. I dr said its fine. I have read many things stating a glass or two a week is actually good for baby. I stick to one per week, and it helps relax me, which is also good for baby
  • If my heartburn wasn't absolute killer, I would definitely be indulging in the occasional glass of wine! Unfortunately I don't see the point of drinking something that will bring me so much after I have finished! Although I did manage to enjoy a cider last week without terrible heartburn afterwards!
  • Yup! Just every now and then. I think if you're not silly with it, it's fine.
  • Red wine, of course, would be your best wine option. But...the occasional small glass is fine. I plan to have that or a glass of Guiness starting in a couple weeks.
  • I wanted red so badly this weekend, poured about an inch of my favorite cab had one sip...and dumped it out. It tasted horrible!

  • I have one a week , maybe every other week . I have a little Pinot Grigio , sometimes as a spritzer . Dr says its totally fine so I'm fine with it .
  • I'm personally not comfortable with it, why even risk that it could possibly do something to LO. There is evidence either way so it's a personal choice. Also, my ob is against any alcohol at all.

To me though, it just seems selfish, there is no reason to drink. And this is coming from someone who was a regular drinker.
  • I've been wanting an ice cold beer or glass of wine, but my blood pressure is too high to even consider a drink. It stays hot forever in TX so I've got plenty of time to enjoy my alcohol on the porch post pregnancy.

  • I will enjoy a glass of wine or beer every now and then, usually with dinner. It's kind of a tease for me though since I always end up wanting more than one. ::mobile smilie::

  • I haven't had any alcohol since finding out that I was pregnant.  I used to have a couple of  drinks with my hubby every Friday night (and I miss it alot!) but now I don't think it's worth it. I can wait 9 months!
  • It's not worth the risk to me when avoiding alcohol for 9 months is not hard at all.  I am not well informed on FAS but I do know that doctor are not sure/can not agree on the amount of alcohol that causes FAS. It's just not worth it to me.  I have friends that I know do it and that is their choice I don't judge or say anything.  If their doctor said it fine then great.

Also I do not like wine.

I have had a glass of wine here or there. The problem is I get this terrible craving for it but then I have horrible acid reflux after I drink it so its not worth it :) Looking forward to sitting down and enjoying a few glasses with no reflux after this baby comes :)

  • I've always been a BIG wine drinker. I stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant, didn't touch it in the first trimester, had an occasional glass in the 2nd trimester, and now that I'm in the 3rd, I have a single glass of Cabernet on Friday evenings to wind me down from the work week. If I already feel relaxed, I skip it. All ok'd by the doc.

  • rite meow? really?

I don't drink while pregnant. I don't have a problem with others doing it, but I work with too many FAS children to risk it. With DS, I got to the point where I was going to have a glass of wine, and then I got a new student with obvious FAS and I decided it wasn't worth it to me.

PP is right, doctors don't have any conclusive evidence of what and when FAS is caused.

Pregnant women in other western countries drink plenty of wine while pregnant and their babies are fine.  Hell, in ancient times wine was all there was to drink because water wasn't safe.

  • I have had 3-4 glasses of wine between 24 weeks and now. I find that it relaxes me and one glass is enough to satisfy the craving. I don't see anything wrong with an occasional glass of wine..

  • I've had a sip here and there and a total of maybe 3 glasses? (not all at once of course!).   Last night was our 6 year wedding anniversary and I had a quarter of a glass of wine before we went out to dinner.  I've never been pregnant this far into the summer, but even sipped slowly over an hour it just added into the regular overheated/out of breath feelings I get so even if it was suddenly proved to be 100% okay I don't think I do it much.

  • I have an occasional glass of wine (usually with or right after dinner)... a glass of red. It's heavenly. I don't do it often, but my doc said to use best judgement and an occasional glass is fine.

  • I've had two half glasses over the whole course of this pregnancy. What was funny was that baby went crazy both times. I'm not sure if he loved it or hated it, but he was certainly more active for about half an hour after drinking it.

  • I've had a sip here and there but oh my gosh, I miss it badly.  I think I may indulge when I'm further along and have a glass, but a sip here and there has sort of held me over.  I miss my cab, merlot and val though.  Sigh.

I've had a small glass of red here and there (once a week max, but likely less than that) and 1 beer, which tasted awful!
