April 2013 Moms

crazy hover mom

Ok I wouldn't necessarily call myself a hover mom, but I'm a first time mom and I wonder if that's how the daycare ladies see me.  I just started back to work last week and my son is in a daycare facility that is literally right next door to my office.  So on my lunch hour, I go there and feed him.  I always bring enough bottles though (I EBF) so that if he gets fussy before I get there, they can go ahead and feed him.  So my question is this:  Is it weird or hover-ey to go there on my lunch every day?  I'm new at this so I'm just doing what my instincts are telling me to do (if I was really following them and could afford it, I'd quit my job in a heartbeat).  Another thing I do is call every day to see when he had a bottle last, so I know when to approximately go on my lunch break.

It's probably more for me than it is for him, because they're truly awesome at his daycare and I have all the faith in the world that he's getting his every need met. It just really breaks up the day for me to go and see him and it gives me peace of mind knowing that I can pop in whenever I want and just see how he's doing.  I always said I wouldn't be one of those moms who wouldn't let their LO walk farther than an inch in front of them for fear of them skinning their knee.  At this point, I'm just wondering if this is normal and if you could, would you do it?

Re: crazy hover mom

  • I would absolutely do a middle of the day feeding if I could. Not only does it give you the chance to see your baby in the middle of the day but I expect that it also cuts out a pumping session (which is golden in my eyes since I despise pumping). Unfortunately, I work a half hour from home and our daycare center is near our home so this isn't an option for me. Don't feel bad about doing what you feel is best for your baby. And I would think your daycare provider would appreciate it because it's also one less bottle they need to give. FWIW, my mom used to stop by my daycare center when I was a baby to do feedings. She's sad for me that I can't do that with my baby.

  • I would go to daycare during lunch if it were closer. There's nothing wrong with that. And really, in this day and age I'd rather see a parent be more active in their baby's life than some of the horror stories you hear out there.

  • I used to work in a day care, in the infant room and we had a few moms do this. I thought it was great. One less baby to feed at that time.

The one mom would change the baby's diaper, feed and then play a little.

All of this -- plus, they opened a daycare adjacent to an office building so I'm sure this happens a lot!  I used to work for a huge corporation with a daycare attached, and they would take the babies for walks in the giant stroller through the office!  Haha!  It was so cute!

  • I would do all of this if I could. When it comes to taking care of my LOs, I don't care if people think I hover or are a worrier. I do what I think is best. I'm sure your LO one loves having a visit from momma during the day!

i agree with this. If you are doing what you believe is best for your LO, who cares what they think? Plus, feeding him every day midday is great for your supply and your breastfeeding relationship with baby.

Enjoy it! I had a friend who visited her DD most days over lunch and gave her a bottle, even though she was EFF. I'm sure daycare understands the daily visits, especially during the first few weeks!

  • WOW.  Thanks so much for all the encouraging words.  I definitely feel better about it.  I am just such a worrier and I need to remember that it's more important to do what my instincts tell me to do instead of worrying about the people at the day care talking sh!t when I leave about what a hover mom I am!!!!  I'm sure they don't even do that according to some of you who have experience in daycare!  I do change his dipe when I'm there.  Seems like they have their hands full with the crawlers and babies eating solids, so maybe they do see it as a break when I come in.  Thanks again.  I feel much better now :)

The daycare on campus goes on field trips to the different offices and departments over the summer - its so cute! This week they are decorating cookies in the dining hall, next week they are playing games in the rec center, etc. Its fun to see kids around campus like that.

  • I work at a corporate center and we love it when moms come in, especially when the babies are very young.  It's more comfortable for mom, more comfortable for baby, and so everyone is happier!  We see it all the time, you are totally normal :Smile

I also think the call to check when you should take your lunch is totally appropriate.  I know if it were me, and I know a mom usually comes in for lunch I would even call her if she hadn't called.  It seems so silly for you to go all the way over and have him either starving because they were waiting for you, or have just fed him.

     keep doing it!!

same here.  I think it's great that you are able to do that.
