Working Moms

What time do you get to work??

I am used to getting in at 9, but considering a new job and i would probably have to be there at 8.
I drop DS off at daycare which takes almost 1/2 hour, then another 30 minutes to get into work. I'm not sure if i can handle getting up and out of the house at 7 every morning.
Am i just lazy? Ha ha

Re: What time do you get to work??

  • Before DS, I was a 9-6 person and didn't have any interest in being in by 8.  Now, I have to pick DS up from DC by 6, so I get in by 8 and leave at 5.  I actually like getting in early now and often am in by 7:30 because my office is quietest in the morning so I can get more done then.  It falls in the "You do what you have to" category.

  • Why are you considering a new job?  Would it be worth the earlier wake-up call?

  • We have two shifts where I work - a 5:45a-5:45p and a 5:45p - 5:45a.  We rotate every 3 months.  I am on the 5:45p-5:45a now.    I get to work around 5:30p to relieve the day shift.  I am not a morning person, so on days, I get there at like 5:40am.  It stinks.

  • I work 7-4.  I get up at 5AM.  It's not bad once you get used to it.  I LOVE sleeping in, but I don't really get to do that any more because of DS anyway.

  • I'm out of the house at 7 every day.  I work from 7:30-4:30.  It's a great schedule.  I have a short commute though, 10 mins.  DD's daycare is right next door to my hospital as well.  You can do it!  Would it mean more free hours at night?  I would definitely do that!

  • I work 9-5 but am on email before and after work and on weekends and sometimes have to work on projects outside of work time...my workplace has more of an 8am start time but before I even agreed to interview I told my boss I would need hour flexibility bc I do 90% of drop off and pick up and other child care stuff and with the commute time I would be absolutely miserable trying to get in at 8... It actually would make me look for a new job if that were the expectation for me, so I make sure to do my job well and be available pretty much all the time by phone or email to compensate.
  • I work Mon,Tues,Thurs,Fri 7am-4:30pm and then from home Wed from 6-10am. I am very luck to have this flexibility...I love it because I am home with both kids by 5pm (day care in on the way home). That gives us play/fun time before dinner!

Before DS, my schedule was 8-4:30.  Now I'm at work from 7-3:30.  It's super early, but I miss a lot of traffic going in earlier.  So I'm up by 5, we're all out the door by 6:15.  I go straight to work and DH drops off DS at daycare since his commute is only 10 minutes.

ETA:  It also works out because DS is naturally up before 6am anyway.  So it's not like we have to wake him or anything.  Plus I get extra time in the afternoon with him.

I beg my husband to leave that early. I'm ready by then and so are the kids but then he drags his rear and we just waste time. Today we left at eight which is just dumb considering it takes us 90 minutes to do both drop offs and get to work. I hate fighting against his inefficiency.

It is sad but when he isn't around in the am, we leave much earlier.

  • I arranged with my boss to work from 74 but i rarely make it by 7. i always make it in by 8.

DH does DC drop off which makes a huge difference on my mornings. I pick up and do 95 of DD's evening care which is great for him!

  • My hours are typically 8-4:30 but I try to arrive at work no later than 7:45am.  I don't have a long commute so I try to leave the house by 7:20am.  I get up at 6:00am and my husband and I get all four kids up and ready to go and we're out the door by 7:20am.  It's hectic but I can't bring myself to get up any earlier.

  • I'm up between 4:30 and 4:45 four days a week and 6 or 6:30 on the fifth day. I'm not gonna lie, it's rough. I have for the most part gotten used to it though. It took a while though. I wish I could say "it's worth it to have more time with him in the evenings" or something like that, but I drop him off when daycare opens at 6:30am and pick him up about 10 minutes before it closes at 6:00pm. I would LOVE to have an extra hour with him in the evenings though, so if that's the trade-off you'd get, I would go for it!

It changes. last year I was getting in between 9:15 and 9:30 because I was doing drop off. I would work until about 6:15 and also do some catch up at night. Now I'll be doing pick up so I'll be at work from 8:30 to 5:15 or so.

  • At my former school - I was out the door by 6:15, LO was at daycare by 6:30 and I was at school by 7.   I had kids at my classroom door by 7:15

You will get used to it.  I wouldn't not take a job because of its start time, but that is just me.

  • Before kids DH and I would commute together.  I would either be in the office by 7:30, or I'd skip my shower at home and he'd drop me off at the gym by 6:45, and I'd work out, get ready, and walk 2 blocks to my office by 8:15 or 8:30.

Now, DH leaves the house by 6 and gets to work by 6:30, then he leaves by 4 to be home by 4:45 to relieve the nanny.  I leave the house by 8 and get in by 9, don't take a lunch, and leave at 5 to be home at 6.  I typically WFH on Wed and Fri.

I miss getting in early.  I'd get so much done because most people don't get in here until 9.

  • Mondays I drop off because dh has a standing 7:30 meeting. I leave the house at 657 get to DC at 7. And hopefully get to work by 730

Tues to Fri I work 7 to 4
  • My hours are 8-5, I get up at 6 and leave the house by 7:20 am (it's a 15 min. drive to DC and then another 15 min to work) I get to work 7:50 every morning.

  • 7:45, and I work 35 minutes from home. DS is at daycare by 7 am every morning. DH picks him up at 3:45-4:00, I get off at 4:15ish, and am home by 5.

  • My job is flexible and I work from home but usually I am working by 9. Lillian gets to DC between 7:45-8. I live about 10 min from DC.

  • I am here at 8 (and usually well before my coworkers without young kids).  I get up by 5:30 to get at least one workout video in, shower, dress/makeup get the child up and leave the house by 7:30.  Daycare is about 5 minutes away and drop off takes about 5 minutes (I am lucky in that I *knock on wood* do not get the daily daycare drop off meltdown).  I need to have here there by 7:45 so she can get breakfast.  Work is about a 10-15 minute drive.

  • I'm up by 5, and leave the house at 6:15, start work at 6:30, and head out by 3:30. DH does the daycare drop off. I've always been an early riser though, and works been very flexible (I'm in a 9-6 industry) so I can see the baby while she's awake.. Getting home at 5:30 or 6 when she goes to bed at 7:30 would have just made me bitter.

We're planning on doing the opposite.  I will do drop offs and DH will pick up since he can technically leave anytime after 5 (though he normally works til 6) and I work until 6 and have a longer commute.
