KKDRAGONFLY:Wow! How tacky. I was not aware of the gift for shower, cash for wedding rule. Although at my 2007 wedding I did get mainly cash.
That's because it's NOT a rule.
I have heard people say that you should "cover your plate" for a wedding, but I think that is also tacky. Plus, how should anyone know what their plate cost? My wedding was kosher. TRUST ME when I say that the cost per plate was a lot higher than if we had gone the non-kosher route.
