A glass of wine

So I had a wonderful glass of wine. I know I'm suppose to wait atleast two hours before pumping for my son. But when I pump, is there a certain amount I'm suppose to pump dump before I feed him again.

Re: A glass of wine

  • Alcohol metabolizes out of your milk at the same rate as your bloodstream. So unless you are feeling buzzed, there is no need to pump and dump.

No. You do not have to wait to nurse or pump as long as you are not totally tipsy/drunk. The saying is that if you are safe to drive you are safe to feed baby after drinking. The majority of the milk within your breast is made as you nurse or pump. so it will be made from whatever is in your blood stream at that time. So if you have limited blood alcohol at the time you pump, your milk will have limited blood alcohol. I know that sound bad, but for most women within 1-2 hours after drinking the alcohol is mostly gone from your system and your milk should contain only traces. If you would normally just nurse your baby, then just nurse your baby. There is no reason to pump and dump. and the only reason you would pump at all is if it were time for you to normally pump. does that make sense? kellymom.com has other info on drinking and nursing if you have more questions.

    I don't type posts; I type novels.

    I don't get tags, sorry.

  • I know this sounds terrible. But I actually start my beer while I'm feeding her. The alcohol isn't in that cycle of milk and will be out of my system when she eats again.

  • In addition to what the PPs have said, my lactation consultant suggested diluting alcohol affected milk with non affected milk, rather than dumping anything. I thought this was good advice if you're uncomfortable nursing after a drink.
