Flat head dilemma

My son has a flat spot in the back of his head. At his four month check-up, the pedi said it was still within normal range for right now, and she expects it to get better on it's own as DS rolls over and sits up. I totally trust her, but I am still trying to keep DS off the back of his head as much as possible except for sleeping. He has an exersaucer, a Johnny jump up, a super seat (like Bumpo only it has a tray around it with stimulation toys), and I have an Ergo.

I try to rotate him around to these things throughout the day, but he really will only use them for 5 or 7 minutes. His favorite thing? His playmat, of course. And he can roll from belly to back, so I can't really make him stay on his belly. I am really trying to avoid too much time on his back, but it's just not feasible to hold him all day, and like I said, he won't use any of the toys that keep him off his head for very long. Any suggestions?

Re: Flat head dilemma

  • Do you have a bouncer he likes with toys? We have been going to PT for torticollis and flat spot on my DD head and they said the bouncer was an ok alternative because its not the direct pressure like the ground is. My DD is pretty happy in it, but I am like you and we play musical chairs a bunch to keep her happy and not just on her back.

  • My suggestion is to try not to worry. Like your lo, my D's prefers his play mat to everything right now. He is starting to prefer laying on his side the last week, and his head is already rounding out.

Really?! We have one those by chance. We got it as a shower gift, I just assumed it was for the car seat. I'll still try to keep him upright, but at least this will help when he only wants his playmat! Thank you!

I just realized that I do have the car seat one, not the noggin nest. Do you think it will have the same benefits? It looks very similar, except the car seat one has the neck brace thing.

I don't know? I think if it has the hole in the back where the head rest in I think it would be the same. I am tempted to get one for my LO to for when he lays on his mat and such!

  • Don't bother with the Noggin Nest. It's complete junk. We have it for the same reason you're considering it. After a couple of uses, literally a couple, the cushion flattened out. Save your money.

  • We're having a similar issue (and going to a head shape specialist next month), so I'm trying to do as much as possible to help it round out naturally. I try to sit him on my knees and bounce while we sing songs. He also really loves standing lately, so I let him practice that as much as possible during the day. It's tough because he also doesn't love any one particular thing for too long, but I feel like at least both of these contribute to his neck and core strength too.

  • Can your babies start using the bumbo seat to sit up or an exersaucer for small periods of time? I am actually a pediatric PT and work with babies all the time for torticolis neck tightening. Does your baby prefer to look one direction when on the floor? Try to premote baby looking both ways equally. Or place all toys on the non preferred side. I was less concerned with flattening with my DD because she would eventually grow hair and it would be mostly hidden. I would be a little more dilagent with boys. And if needed a helmet is nothing to be scared of. They are actually very cut these days and babies are usually not bothered by them at all.
