One & Done: Only child

Scheduling a Vasectomy?

Last month DH finally said yes to having a vasectomy (despite everyone telling him he shouldn't because we ARE going to want another child when DD turns 2).  We haven't really talked much about it since, I guess because I don't know where to go from here.  To get the procedure scheduled would he make an appt with his GP, then he refers DH to a surgeon?  Or do we just have to find a doctor who performs the procedure on our own?

I imagine we'll have to pay the full shot since it's an elective procedure.  But I am kinda hoping I am wrong. I know every insurance company is different but what has been your experience with coverage?

For us, my husband went to his primary care physician and got a referral to a urologist. Depending on your insurance, you may just be able to skip the GP-- I'd call to find out so you don't have to waste the time and co-pay if you can go straight to the source. Ours was 100% covered by insurance.

You know what's right for you so don't worry about everyone telling you different. We always knew we only wanted one but we agreed to wait one year to be absolutely sure. We waited, felt the very same and had the procedure. No regrets!

  • TOTALLY depends on your insurance (if you have ppo or hmo, etc).  It depends on whether your insurance requires referrals.   If they do, you'll need to go through his GP first.  If not (like us) you can go straight to a urologist and call them up and make appt.

Ours was covered, minus a $30 specialist visit.  This will totally vary upon insurance again, though.

Yay for the decision to do it!

  • My sister's insurance covered it in full for her husband, but there was a 6 month waiting period. He just went to his primary physician and got a referral.

  • Thanks ladies!  It gives me a little hope knowing that several of you had the procedure covered by insurance.  Our insurance is pretty decent, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

And good idea about calling the insurance company first to see if a referral is required.  It would be nice to save that co-pay if it's not.

  • I am so glad you asked this question. I have been curious as well. And have a follow up question. My DH and I are still kind of young but are 100% that we only want one. It was a decision before I was even pregnant.

Do you any of you know about an age restriction? I have heard that women aren't allowed to have tubes tied if they only have one child and are young.

    He is 26(almost 27) and I am also 26.

    TIA

This isn't a rule/restriction as much as doctor's personal preference. Some won't do the procedures on young people because they don't want a patient to regret the choice and come back saying "You shouldn't have preformed that surgery on me so young" (or something along those lines). If someone wants their tubes tied they have every right to do it they just may need to try harder to find a doctor to do it.

My friend's sister knew from a very young age she wanted no children and had her tubes tied when she was 25. It took a few consultations before she found a doctor willing to do the procedure on a childless woman under 30.

  • ^ yes, this. I've heard of some doctors simply not wanting to do it based on age. Personally, I would run from that urologist anyway...  it's really none of his business. But I digress, my H was 25 and I was 27 when we went in and he had no issue and did his.  So yes, you will definitely find one to do it.

  • Also ask the insurance co. what it would cost for the procedure. Do you have to reach say, a 1200 deductible and then they'll pick up the rest?
