I'm watching that show on Bravo, Newlyweds. One of the couples just added up all the money they recieved as gifts. It was over 40 thousand dollars!!

Is it just me, or is that ridiculous?

Meh, DH and I give 250 as a general rule (personal choice, not expected. We also don't attend a lot of weddings, maybe 2 per year). If you had 100-125 give that much you'd have over 30G's. Good for them, hope the invested well and/or paid down a good amount if not all of their debt.

It was a Greek wedding and according to them an average gift is like 250 to 500 and a good gift is 600 to 1000.

Someone gave 200 and they were so taken back by it.

Dude. that is a lot of money. We maybe got a total of $5,000-$6,000. Most of the gifts were in the $100 range, but some family members gave us $500 and one even gave us $2,000.

Geesh I'm in the wedding industry and I've never thought about how much gifts added up to. But taking in their culture and how many guests were invited, I'm assuming 300 or so that probably is right/normal.

Eh. In our family, many older members will gift the maximum nontaxable amount to close relatives for weddings and graduations. It adds up. We'll pay it forward when we are older too.

Out of curiosity, what's the maximum nontaxable amount?

In our family, cash gifts are standard for weddings and usually around the $150-$250 amount per couple. I guess if you had a huge guest list and everyone gave that amount, it could definitely add up.

This year, I think it increased to $14k.

LOL... that's what I was thinking too... f'ucking Germans and Irish... just wanting the open bar at the reception and not ponying up thousands of dollars.  A-holes!!!

Same situation here. 

$50 seems to be the norm around here.  And then we had the single guys that had no clue that you should even give a gift.

Non-family gets $40 (cash or GC). Family I will go up to a $100 gift. If they don't register they get $40.

 

 

My grandparents weren't in the 1%. You can't take it with you, as they say. They saved well for retirement and passed along some cash to the grandchildren rather than having it sit in an account until they passed away.

Are you one of only a couple grand kids? Then maybe I can see this.

I order for my grandparents to do this for 1 graduation and one wedding per grandchild, they would have had to have more than $500k extra.

 

We don't have a large family.
