Advice??

So done with 2nd night of injections and chickened out again to give myself the shots! Ugh it's harder than I thought it was going to be. I'm such a wuss!! The Menopur burns so badly going in! I hope I get used to that! So my question is how does everyone take their shots? I was standing up for both times but my mom thinks I may be more relaxed laying down. Any advice??!

Re: Advice??

  • I do them standing up. My DH does all the shots. However, it gets easier with time. I think it's easiest standing up. Just take a deep breath and try to focus yourself - you are in charge of your emotions around this, but it's also totally okay to ask someone else to do the shots for you each time. You will get through this! Frankly, I think taking shots OR giving them requires guts, and you are doing your part as it is. Hang in there.
    | Married since 2008 | DH and I: Both 30 | Me: Endometriosis and Carrier of an X-Linked Dominant Genetic Disorder | DH: Low Morph | Planning IVF with PGD and PGS in 2013 | Freeze-All IVF #1: March 2013 ER 3/26. 29R, 12M, 11F. 4 5AA frozen blasts. Freeze-All IVF#2: May 2013 ER 5/15. 31R, 21M, 20F. 6 5AA frozen blasts. Our PGD probe was completed in late June (total of 20 weeks to develop). PGD and PGS Results came on 6/19: 3 healthy embryos (normal chromosomes and unaffected by my family's genetic disorder). FET #1: July 2013 Natural Cycle - Cancelled due to insufficient lining (only got to 7.5mm). FET #1.2: August 2013 - Medicated Cycle with Lupron & Estrogen Patches to build up lining. Single embryo transfer was 8/23. Beta #1: 240! Beta #2: 578! U/S on 9/19 at 6w4d: We saw the heart beating at 131bpm. Second U/S on 10/4 at 8w5d: We saw the heart beating at 178bpm. EDD 5/11/2014

  • Menopur sucks! It always burns! Going really slow with the shot tends to help me, I don't think it burns as much that way.

As far as doing them yourself, it's totally ok if you have to have someone else do them. I had to have a huge conversation with myself the before my first round. By the end of my first day of shots I was a wreck, but it will hopefully get easier on you if you do decide to do them. I take my shots sitting down, I don't know if that helps at all, but it works for me. And I always give myself a Hershey kiss or two after my shots. Something to look forward to, lol.

  • I always sit now. I need to ensure I have extra skin to pinch. Are you icing the area at all before injecting the menopur? It will help so much with the burn. I've always done my injections myself except for pio. Its really not as bad as you think. Does it hurt when hubby does it? Just use a darting motion.

  • If you started with the intention of doing them yourself, you are doing amazing!!  I would lay down, stand up, sit down, whatever made me most comfortable at the time.  Plus some were in public bathrooms so standing up was the only option!  I was able to look at the shots in the final week and the first night I was a totally baby.   And I pass out when I see others getting shots!

  • Don't worry if someone else gives you the shots.  The first few cycles my DH gave me all of mine.  Sometimes we had schedule conflicts and he wasn't home and I had to do it myself.  It took a lot of concentration and breathing, but it was mostly in my head.  Quick darting motion is key.  When DH does PIO shots, I am standing, but I am holding onto a pillow and hugging it so I can focus on something else.  Whatever works I guess! Good luck.

Don't beat yourself up!  There is no way around the fact that IT HURTS!  I did do most of my injections (except PIO) sitting down...there was more skin to grab.  I found that injecting the menopur into my thigh was a little better (I think more mental) than in the stomach!  Hang in there!
TTC 2 years- Me and DH (28) with (severely) low sperm count- less than 40 total (last 2 SA showed only 5 and 6 sperm each)
    IVF #1: ER 1/23/13- 4 eggs retrieved, 3 eggs fertilized; ET with 1 embryo 1/28/13 2 frosties beta #1 2/5 was 4.8- beta #2 2/7 3.5; BFN
FET #1- transferred one beautiful 4AA embie. Praying this is my take home baby. Beta 5/7/13- BFFN!!!
    IVF #2: ER 7/17/13: 6R/3F- transferred 1 blast and 1 10 cell embryo 5dt.   Beta hell.  #1 2.5, #2 2.2- BFFFN! REALLY?
IVF #3: ER 12/1 and only 2 retrieved.  1 fertilized with ICSI.  Was planning on transferring one fresh and one frozen....fresh was only 14 cells at day 5...CANCELLED and devastated due to 5cm blood filled cyst in ovary and blood in uterus.
IVF #4: Antagonist protocol with endometrial scratch day one of stims.  ER 4/21: 6R/4M/3F- transferred 2 beautiful blasts (5dt) and one was hatching!  No frosties but hoping we won't need it!  Beta 5/4/14- 444(8dp5dt), Beta #2 10dp5dt 1002!  THIS HAS GOT TO BE IT!!!!!!!!!!  First US 5/15 we saw two of the most beautiful gestational and yolk sacs I have ever seen!

  • Dh gave me all the shots except  a couple times when he was unavailable.  I liked to keep him involved.  I did mine sitting or standing and then IM ones laying down.  Try having DH give you injections laying down if you think you would feel more comfortable.  Either way it will work.  Menopur was my least favorite because it burned so bad!!!  As you can tell, you are not alone!  You should be proud of yourself!!
