swaddling

How long did you swaddle your baby? My son hates being swaddled. He likes having his arms out and above his head

Re: swaddling

  • My baby was swaddled for the 3 days she was in the hospital. We tried doing it at home, but my LO loves to have her arms free also. She would keep trying to push them out. We would just swaddle her from the armpits down, but only for her first 2 weeks.

We will keep swaddling until he can roll over. Sometimes he prefers his arms out and will break free at least one arm most nights.

Our hospital and LOs pedi have told us to swaddle with arms out. I guess swaddling with arms in can cause suffocation. DD has always been swaddled with arms out and she sleeps fine that way.

We stopped swaddling when DS turned one month old. Our pedi told us that we could stop swaddling by then, plus DS always managed to get his arms free of the swaddle. But I think it all depends on the baby. Some babies love being swaddled and others don't. DS didn't seem to care for being swaddled and didn't seem to miss it when we stopped.

  • We swaddle at night only. I'm hoping to break the swaddle in the next couple of weeks. It's impossible to side lay breastfeed while LO is swaddled.
  • We swaddled DS until he was 5 months old. So far DD is two weeks and we're still using the swaddle. She would probably prefer to have her arms out, but when they are (nap time) she doesn't sleep hard - she wakes herself up quite a bit.
  • DS was swaddled in the hospital, and we've been doing it at home, but mostly with his arms out.

  • We swaddle, DD is a Houdini when it comes to her arms though. No matter how snug we make it, she busts out. We ended up getting the swaddle Velcro sacks, they work a lot better but she still does this hulk move and busts her arms out when she's upset.

  • DS is 4 months today and we still swaddle him. He sleeps much better swaddled but some babies don't like it. I'm dreading when he starts rolling and we have to stop!

This! DD likes her arms out, but she wakes herself up if I swaddle arms out so we do a complete swaddle with the Velcro or regular blanket and let her fish her arms out if she really wants them free.

I find it much easier to nurse side lying when she's swaddled. Otherwise her arms get in the way.

We also swaddle at night only. I'm not sure how long we'll continue. She doesn't love it, but she doesn't hate it either.

  • DD1 - never

    DD2 - 4 months

    DS - 7 weeks

Each kid has been so different. DS loved it at first, then just recently he started really struggling against it. We put him in a sleep sack and he sleeps so much better.

  • DS1 was about 3-3.5 months when we stopped

    DS2 was 4+ months

DS3 is less than 2 weeks old now, so he's still swaddled.  He sleeps in the Halo brand ones, which are really easy to swaddle with arms out if your LO would prefer the comfort of being snuggly but wants his arms out.  Just wrap the swaddle wings around his belly under his arm pits.
