I had it for 3 years before we tried to get pregnant and loved it then. I didn't have any side effects. When I was on BC pills, I had bad migraines and mood swings but that all went away when I got the Mirena. After I had the baby, I got another inserted, and again, it's been great. No problems or side effects.
You will find horror stories about ALL kinds of birth control on the internet, even BC pills. Just talk to your doctor and figure out what will be best for you.
The things I like about Mirena are that it last for 5 years, I don't have to take a pill every day or get a shot whenever. Basically it's inserted and I don't have to worry about it again for 5 years. And there aren't the hormonal side effects for me like with other forms of BC.
I love mine. Insertion was fine, I had cramping and light spotting for a couple of days afterward. I don't know if it was the trigger or just a coincidence, but I got my first postpartum period the following week. I had two more periods and now it's been two months since I've had one. I love not trying to remember to take a pill at the same time every morning (so hard with the baby). My husband occasionally feels the strings, but they're getting softer and he says they don't really bother him.
I waited until my insurance covered it under the ACA, and am glad I did - it's about $1000 for the device and insertion. I paid nothing out of pocket.

Only waiting on my hub's vasectomy next month to get mine out. It grew into the wall, never even lightened my period, and I think I am REALLY lucky to not be pregnant right now.
Gained weight, major cravings- I am relieved to be getting it out.
