Anyone from/visited the Finger Lakes (NY) area?

We are driving up to Toronto in June and wanted to stop in the Finger Lakes region for 2-3 days.  We don't want to do too much...basically swimming in the lake, light hiking (manageable for a 2 and 4 year old) and possibly a museum.

 Can anyone recommend a town that's kid friendly, near the lakes and also near shops/restaurants?  Also, would we be too rambunctious of a group to stay in the inns or bed & breakfasts?  Or should we stick to the bigger hotel chains? (We don't really have a preference either way...just whichever is more convenient).

I live in Ithaca and I third this recommendation.  Tons to do here, parks (both playground kind and state), hiking, swimming in Cayuga Lake, wine touring (ok not kid friendly but hey), farmer's market is not to be missed, waterfalls and you know gorg
