How long to pump?

It's my first day back to work and my first time missing a feeding. How long do you pump for? I'm assuming if I normally feed 15 minutes on each side that I'll pump for 1520 minutes?

  • I usually do 15 min or when I see my milk start to really slow down. Though I'm not back at work yet so not sure if that is realistically what I will be doing or not, I hope so but I will be the only one in my office a lot of the time and will need to hol

  • I do 15 minutes. Even if I stop really producing at 10 I still pump, since a pump isn't as effective as your baby it helps to keep the supply up if you keep the machine running a little bit longer. Sometimes I'll have a 2nd let down at 12-14 minutes even

  • I'm a little different since I'm EP'ing for 2, but...

I'm currently pumping ~ 45 minutes every 3.5 hours due to there not being openings to pump every 3 hours in our lactation center.

My advice would be to pump until your breasts are em

  • i started out at 15. Then went to 20 and ended up at 30. I found i had another let down at 25 mins. But if you are getting the amount of milk you need after 15 mins then i wouldn't suggest going any longer

  • I've always pumped at least 20 minutes; sometimes longer if milk is still flowing.

  • I pump until 1 minute after the flow of milk has stopped, but I make sure to pump for a minimum of 20 minutes.

So if the flow stops at 18 minutes, I go until 20. If it stops at 26 minutes, I go until 27.

    Hope that makes sense...

  • I pump for at least 5 minutes after the milk stops coming in hopes of increasing my supply.  That usually ends up being around 20 minutes.
