s/o "Full Term" -- what is the definition?

I don't want to hijack another thread, but I'm really curious here.  There is some debate about what constitutes "full term" -- is it 37, 39, or 40+ weeks?   I've heard arguments for all three, but I'm curious to know what you all think / what your OBs have told you and the reasoning behind it.

In the end, I don't really think it matters.  The baby will come when the baby comes, or there will be a reason for induction / c-section.  But I'm still interested.

  • I've always heard 37 weeks. I think it has to do with lung and organ development. But the number is fairly arbitrary, just like the definitions of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester.

    For me, it's the day

  • My OB considers "full" term 38 weeks for twins and 39 weeks for singletons.

ETA: there seems to be a wide variety of definitions of full vs early term, etc.  Looks like anywhere from 37-39 is pretty standard.

    One other thing...
