Pregnant after a Loss

Scared. Small baby, induction scheduled for Saturday.

I went for my weekly appt and an u/s to see if the baby has flipped or if I needed to schedule my c-section.  Well, Olivia flipped, so that's cool.  However she is measuring super small, 4lbs 7 oz at 36w2d.  She has only gained a pound in almost 6 weeks.  I know these can be off, but with my funky shaped uterus, it appears she ran out of room really early.  Plus my fluid is at 8, the low side of acceptable.  My OB is super worried and is inducing me Saturday night.  I am super scared of losing her before Saturday.  I'm scared that she will be in NICU.  I'm overall just freaked.  My last day of work was supposed to be Friday.  I'm now on bed rest until I get induced so I guess today was my last day.  Holy crap.  I never thought I would have a preemie.  I'm not ready.  Freaked out. Tell me good stories about having healthy preemies and small babies out of room.

  • My niece was born at 30 weeks. No ventilator. No oxygen. Just lights and a cpap. She is now 3 months old and is thriving and beautiful! It is scary for sure but you will be fine!! Sending tp!!

  • I don't blame you for being scared. I do have a preemie story with a great ending for you...

My cousin delivered her twins at 25w 3d, they together weighed less than your baby does now. The first one was able to come home before their due date. The second was home about 5 weeks after. There were some scary times through the whole ordeal, but they are going to be 5 in July and, aside from the smaller one still being on the very petite side, they are happy, healthy pre-schoolers. In addition to those 2, my sister had twins that were about 3 lbs a piece and my brother's son was just under 4 pounds. All happy healthy kids ranging from 8-13 years old.

If you are at a hospital with a good NICU, your LO will be fine. Try to take it easy and take care of yourself until Saturday. You have done everything you can and now it's time for Olivia and her docs to do everything they can for a happy outcome. ((HUGS))

  • Small doesn't necessarily mean under developed.  You're really close to full term.  She may not even need the NICU. My friend's sister had a 4 lbs. baby at 36 weeks and he was fine.

    T&Ps everything will  be okay.

Looks like you will be 37 weeks by then and that is full term so will keep FX that LO will be fine and not need NICU! Lots of girls on my March board gave birth early (one was even in January) and all babies are doing fine.

  • My friend had a baby at 26 weeks, and baby is now a happy, healthy toddler!  My aunt... born 50 years ago!... was only 3lbs at birth and is now a doctor who has clumbed some of the world's highest mountains.  A coworker of mine had a daughter at 35 weeks, and she was 5 lbs even.  That little girl is now 5, and one of my favorite little girls in the world.  Super precocious, super smart, super pretty.

Best wishes to you and your little girl!! xx

  • Huge (((hugs))).  My first goal after the whole cerclage craziness was 28 weeks.  After that, MFM and my OB consistently told me that if I can get to 34 weeks then they will be super happy.  I've been told over and over again that outcomes once you hit 34 weeks are essentially the same as a full term baby.  Yes, the baby may need a little time in the NICU, but there won't be any long term impact from that.  Babies do really, really well when they are as far along as you are.

I'm sorry that you have to go through this.  Sending T&Ps that everything goes great this weekend.

  • PAL lurker chiming in...

I understand having the rug pulled out from under you.  I went in to my 37w appt and ended up being induced that day.  My bag wasn't even packed.  I was dx'd with Pre-E and they wouldn't let me go home (understandably).  My son was born the next day at 37w4d.  He was 6lb2oz at birth, and other than needing his lungs suctioned when he first was born, he did awesome.  I'm sharing my story since he's a 37 weeker and if you are induced on Saturday that's what you'll have.  He was also a successful induction.  Took his sweet time to progress, but but I didn't need a c/s.  Hopefully the measurements are off and she'll be bigger.  It does sound like there might be some IUGR going on, and like she may be better on the outside soon.

As a 37 weeker she'll be considered full term.  They may still want her in the NICU depending on how she's doing, but I can tell you from experience (DS was sent to NICU for 4 hours for observation and antibiotics since I had a fever during delivery) that she'll likely be one of the biggest and strongest babies there.

Sorry this got long, I feel for you on the freaking out and feeling like your world just got turned upside down.  Just know that you've done great to get this far and you'll do just fine with whatever Olivia brings your way.  Babies do things on their own schedules, and apparently she wants to be your Lucky Charm.

  • DH was born at 36 weeks on the dot.  He's adopted, so we don't know any of the details, but there's nothing in the records we do have to suggest he was in the NICU.  That was 25 years ago, and medical advances have grown in leaps and bounds.

I'm wishing you and your LO all the best.  You can do this!!

  • No advice ... But glad they are being proactive. If she has run out of room and isn't thriving, she is better off on the outside. Just remember that! Try not to focus on the what-ifs, and still just celebrate the fact that she will be here Saturday, small or not. Since she is going to full-term, she will more-than-likely be fully developed, and may not require any NICU time at all. Best of luck to you!

  • My son was induced at 36w4d.  The term for that is late preemie.  It all worked out okay.  He didn't need the NICU or anything, although there were effects that were noticeable for about the first year.  He just finally graduated for the dermatologist last month at 23 months.  My LC and pedi were both great sources of information regarding preemies.  They overstimulate easily, but that just means you snuggle her close, and it all works out.  Everything will be fine.

I spent my last few days before my induction making lists for my family, since I awas also on bedrest.  Make a grocery list, a meal list, a list of last minute things you need for baby, books you'd like from the library, etc.  Also, I read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.  It's a very positive book (although on the far end of crunchy; take it with a grain of salt), and it helped me not feel worried.
