I am starting to decorate the nursery and I was wondering if a crib mobile is necessary. It seems like a decorative accent but as a ftm with no experience, I am not sure. Thoughts?
Edited to add: You also are supposed to take them down once LO starts pulling up to stand in the crib. For us that was around 8 months, so it didn't last that long. The crib soother on the other hand, we used for 3 years!
My first LO was a really light sleeper, so barely touching the mobile with my head after laying him down, was enough to wake him up. The mobile didn't last long. I definitely suggest an aquarium though!

We have the Fisher price projection mobile. It is awesome! When they are little there is a little umbrella where the scene is projected. There are 3 different buttons "heartbeat", "mozart" and "ocean". Once my son could reach the mobile we took the umbrella off and now it projects on the ceiling. He's almost 2 and he still loves it.
We have a jungle sounds crib soother that all of my boys have loved. They learned at a really young age to push on the little toucan to get the music to play. We had a mobile for DS1, but he pulled up at 5 months and we had to take it down.
I think I am going to make a decorative mobile to hang above this baby's crib. He will be able to see it, but it will hang from the ceiling so he can't reach it.

DS loved the Homedics SoundSpa & Projector (aka the baby crack machine). It has music, sounds, and 3 disks that project rotating pictures. We used ours until he moved into his big boy bed last spring. The rotating portion did finally give out, but we still used just the picture (it gave just the right amount of light-we used it kind of like a night light until he fell asleep and then would go in and turn off the light).
I made a mobile and hung it from the ceiling so he can't reach it. I made it out of origami cranes in high contrast patterns. Babies are supposed to be stimulated by black and white, but our nursery is navy blue and white. I figured that would have the same effect! I have pictures in my blog, linked in siggy if you're interested.

we're doing something similar. I'm making a mobile out of some of the animals that are in the fabric we're getting to make our curtains, and we're going to hang them from the ceiling. I haven't started it yet, but I should be getting my fabric sometime this week!
Re: Crib Mobile?
In my opinion, totally not necessary. They usually only turn around for about 10 minutes and our DD got bored with it quickly. We bought a crib soother instead, like this one: https://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=40449555&RN=7236&

When he was an infant we used the mobile over the changing table as he loathed getting his diaper changed.
