Breaking the rock n play and swaddle habit

My DS sleeps really well in his rock n play and prefers to be swaddled. We had him in his crib but for the past week he was ill and our doctor recommended elevating his head for sleep. When he was in the crib he got up every 2 hours.

Any suggestions on how to transition back and retain a better sleep?

  • We elevate his crib mattress. Just put a blanket or towel underneath the mattress on one side.

We did this too when K was sick.  It doesn't help as much if your baby moves a lot, though; she kept winding up sideways or even upside-down so we had to stop.  To transition from the RnP we first moved the RnP to her nursery to get her used to being in that room, and then started putting her in her crib.  On the first night in her crib, we put her back in the RnP after the first time she woke up, on the second night we did it after the second time, and on the third night she was in it all night.  We also started putting her in her PnP or flat on the couch for naps during the day to get her used to sleeping flat.

Breaking the swaddle habit has been a bit tougher, and I would recommend tackling one issue or the other (swaddle first if he's rolling).  We did one arm out for a week, and it was okay (but coincided with the 4-month wakeful, so it's hard to say what was the bigger issue).  When we tried both arms out, it was a failure and we wound up getting the Merlin Magic Sleep Suit to transition, which has actually been working very well.
