hours DH/SO works (stolen from wm board)?

So there was a post on the WM board about how many hours your DH/SO works per week.  I have to say I was truly amazed at the responses.  So many people have SOs that work 60+ hours/week.  What about for you guys?  And if they work 60+ hours/week do they get to see your LOs?

ETA: My DH works about 40 hrs/week, but he works from home, so he has no commute.  We're very lucky with the flexibility that allows.

Re: hours DH/SO works (stolen from wm board)?

  • My DH is contracted to work a minimum of 48hrs a week, but in reality, he works a minimum of 55hrs a week and has worked as many as 130hrs a week at one time. I would say he works 60hrs a week on average.

He usually sees DS for at least an hour in the morning, sometimes two. He doesn't see DS again before he goes to bed for the night. He also sees him all day on his two days off.

  • I was blown away as well!  I was also shocked at how many moms work only 40 hours.  I would love to match up the moms and the partner responses to see if there are any couples that both work tons or both work 40...and I would love to know some of the industries/roles.

DH here travels at least 3 weeks a month and works 60-80 hours a week.  Every Sunday he works for a couple of hours because so much comes in over the weekends.  He used to work a few hours on Saturday too - but he is cutting back as the difference in his rating/bonus is 0 between working 10 hours on a weekend and working 2 hours on a weekend.

It's a lesson I had to learn, too.

  • DH work from 1 to 10 pm Monday through Friday. Anna is fussier in the evenings so sometimes it would be nice to have him home earlier, but I babysit and it's so nice having his help in the mornings!

  • I think DH and I both work 50-60 hours a week. We minimize daytime hours and alternate schedules (I go in early and he stays with her in the a.m. and then I pick her up early and he comes home a little late. We jump back online to work in the evenings, work during naps and do some work on weekends. Overall though she has a pretty great schedule with short hours at daycare since we are able to cover for each other.

  • Currently DH is contracted for 35 hours a week but it is very flexible. As long as he gets all his weekly duties done, he oesn't neccessarily have to be present for all those hours. However he is currently looking for another part time job to help make ends meet. In fact he has a biggg interview tomorrow morning!

  • I think most weeks are around 50 hours. If there's a big project, he can work nights and weekends, too. He sees Cody 1-2 hours at night, and usually a good portion of the weekend. I SAH.

This makes a lot of sense to me.  I imagine staggering work days works really well for a lot of families.  I hadn't thought of that option.

btw- do you mind me asking what you guys do for a living?

  • DH's schedule is constantly changing, but on average he works 60-70 hours per week, that is when he is home.  He is gone 70% of the time with his new job and that doesn't even count deployments which are coming up this summer.  DH will see L for 1-1.5 hours each night after work before he goes to bed.  He will only see L in the morning if he goes in late to fly at night.

  • R probably works between 6080 hrs a week sometimes more if he is implementing a big project or doing cutovers. He travels between offices in NH, MA, NY and CA because he is in charge of their entire computer network. He works crazy hours and has I be available at the drop of a hat. It's part of why I am a SAHM. Daycare would be way too crazy and if he were sick it would be hard to get time off etc.

Edit. He tries to be home at 530 every night to spend an hr and a half with Grey. Weekends he also tries to play with Grey and spend the time Grey isn't napping together. It's a hard balancing act but R really tries to get in as much time a he can
  • H does 50-60 hours a week, all on the weekdays. He leaves before DD is up, and sees her for maybe an hour - 90 mins at night. Weekends he is all ours.

I work 40 hours, but have a 30-45 minute commute.

Now I'm going to have to check out that thread!

  • DH works between 50-55 hours a week.  On Tues/Thurs he works 2 jobs and is gone until 10:30-11pm.  He doesn't see DD except for about 15 min when he stops by to grab something to eat on the way to job #2.  MWF he sees her for about 2 hours.  Most mornings she is up when I am and I take her to daycare and I am off earlier than he is so I pick her up from daycare.

I work 40 hours but I work 7-3:30 so I have a lot of evening time with DD.

  • Three weeks out of the month he works 40 hrs. The last week in each month, his close week at work, he works about 50.

  • DH and I both work 40 hours a week.  I work days M-F.  He works in retail, so his hours and days vary.  He sees DS every morning, and most evenings.  I have DS by myself a lot because DH works a lot of weekends and at least a few late nights per week.

  • DH is a teacher, so I'm not sure. School hours are 8:30-4:30.

ETA: I forgot my own hours. I work 32-34 hours a week. I work Monday-Thursday.

  • H is in school, and works part time, so recently he spends so much time away from home. It really sucks, but we know it won't be forever.

M to Th he leaves with us at 7:30 am, and comes home at about 9 pm. He gets Lucia when she wakes at 6:30 and spends that hour with her. On Fridays he cones home by 6ish at the latest so he eats dinner with us. On good weekends he goes to study for only 4 to 5 hrs per day. On bad weekends it is about 10 hrs per day. We are both ready for his svhedule to lighten up!

  • DH is a teacher and 2 sport coach. From August thru the end of February he is normally gone from 6 am to 6 or 7 pm 5 or 6 days a week, plus work from home. From March thru the end of school (usually mid June) he works from 7:30 until 5ish. During the summer he works probably 3 or 4 hours per day at Summer school.  Last year he had the same schedule but add on an hour commute each way, he basically never saw Ava until she was a month or 2 old!

  • H and are both in law enforcement. We're technically salaried to work 40 hours per week but with the rotating schedules sometimes its more and sometimes it's less.

  • H works 10 - 10.5 hours/day and then has a 1.5 hour commute each way, so if you factor that in it's over 70 hours away from home - he rarely gets to see Nat during the week, and his boss is a complete shadoob so no real wiggle room with the hours... :-(

  • Most weeks DH works between 45-55 hours per week.  He is DOTD regulated so he can't work more than 60 thankfully.  He sees Skyler every morning and he drops her off at daycare at 8am, but most days he isn't home before 8pm.  During the slow time of year between February and July he can sometimes get home as early as 6:30, but it is rare.  Every now and then he will get off at 7 and he makes it home to see Skyler for a few minutes before she goes to bed at 7:30.

I wish I could keep her up until 8 or 8:30 to see him, but if she goes to bed past 7:45 she wakes up multiple times per night.  The good thing is that he has weekends off and we usually spend most weekends attached at the hip as a family.  During football season he does watch the Saints game with his work buddies and he goes fishing and hunting occasionally but usually it's the three of us all weekend long.

My work week is 35 hours so it helps that I am not working as much as him and dealing with LO by myself every evening.

  • DH works at a university and works between 45-55 hours a week. I work between 28-40 a week, depending on the week. DH works from 11-8 PM on Wed and Thurs, so he sees DS until 10:30 in the morning. He also only works 20 minutes away, so he sees him for 2 hours in the evening. His extra hours mostly come in on the weekends, since he has to work every other Saturday.

  • Dh is about 45 hours a week, he has 1 week day off and Sundays. I really wish we both had the weekends. But DH gets to spend a whole day with LO, and that does save on childcare. But I wish he had a normal 8 to 5 job, he works 10 am to 7 pm.

What is your DH in school for?  I always hear you talk about him being in school and I always wondered what he was studying.  Sorry if you've mentioned it before.

  • DH averages about 60/week (possibly more if he has a trial).  I average 60+ Mon-Friday, then everyother weekend have a 24 hour call.  It sucks.  When we move, DH may only work part-time,

  • DH works 37.5 hours a week. I would cry if my DH worked 60 hour work weeks, wow. He used to have not so good hours at a previous job when we were first married and I am so thankful it's not like that anymore, esp now that we have Addy. His job is fairly flexible when he would like it to be too, for example he's not feeling well today so he's probably coming home a little early and that's no problem because the company will just let him make up the hours whenever else he wants to within the week.

  • I am amazed that so many of you tolerate working such long hours! I have never had a job that required me to work more than 8 hour days. Sure, I could have stayed late or gone in early but why? The work will still be there tomorrow. I make a point every.single.day. of leaving by 4:00 (I start at 7:30). If something is urgent I will stay but that is very much the exception - not the rule.

Maybe I'm lucky? But it helps that I have no desire to "climb the ladder" at work. I work to live, not live to work. I would rather spend my time at home than trying to "catch up" or "get ahead" of my work. Like I said, it will still be there tomorrow.

DH works 41.5 hours a week. He only works OT if no one else will take it, but he always tells the other guys if they want it they can have it.  I can't imagine him volunteering for OT because it means time away from his family.

When it comes down to it, time with us is more important than money.

I am NOT saying you all don't feel the same way so put the flame guns away...I'm just saying how it is in my house.  60 hour weeks are unheard of (even when you count my hour each way commute!).

I, too, am very curious about this! Especially since I think you mentioned he'd have to do grad school after he finishes his current degree.

  • H works 50 to 60 hours a week. He sees Asher for maybe an hour before bed, usually less.

I work around 15 hours a week but I commute over an hour each way.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • H and I both work from home so we don't have commute time unless you count me taking the boys in and picking them up.  H starts work about 7am while I take the boys and start work by 9am and we eat at home while we work so maybe 30 mins for lunch.  I leave to pick up the kids around 4:45 and H usually works until 3:30 and then he goes to help his dad for awhile.  So H works about 8 hours a day and I work 7 1/2 give or take.  But we do work on weekends as well and sometimes in the evenings when I get back from picking up the boys I do more.

I'd say we work about 45 hours each per week, more or less depending on where we are in our project.  When H travels, he works more because there is no reason to stop early in the day and he would rather get it done asap and get home.  So those times he works probably 50 or more hours.  We are day rate contract workers, so hourly time doesn't count.  We have a set amount of time to complete a project and they don't care if we work a week straight and take off a week - as long as it is in their hands when the deadline hits.  So we can take off a week as long as we bust our butts the week before/after.
