What are all you planning to do with your dog when you go into labor? Are you going to leave him home and have someone walk him or try to give him to a friend while youre in the hospital?
We have a dog door so she can go in and out on her own, and a friend will come over a few times a day to feed her and hang out with her.
We did the same thing when we had DS (and had two dogs at the time) and it worked out fine. Not ideal since they are labs and they prefer people staying in the house with them, but for a short-term absence it's doable.
We are leaving her at home, She's been left home alone during the day and once or twice over night and does completely fine. As long as she gets her two walks and feedings once in the morning and once in evening, she's content to stay in the house forever. Luckily the hospital is only a 20 minute drive away so DH can steal away for an hour or so to take care of her. She'll be lonely for a few days without us but I'm sure she'll get over it. She's very much a lazy couch potato so she might even enjoy having a mini vacation before the baby gets here!
mabenner1:DH went home each night to walk and spend time with the dog, as well as to shower and sleep in a real bed. He would leave when I'd doze off at night, then be back first thing in the AM.
This is kind of our plan as well - plus my parents will be coming in from out of town, so they will probably stay at the house and be ableto look after her as well if DH decides to stay at the hospital
I have 4 fur babies (2 cats 2 dogs) obviously the cats will be just fine but my 2 dogs (pugs) have been our babies for 6 and 3 years (this adjustment is going to be so much fun I can feel it) ANYWAY they will be staying at my parents house when we go to the hospital and probably staying there for the first week or 2 until we get settled.
They are used to getting all the attention and since my parents live 10 minutes away from us I have a feeling we will be there visiting a lot at first so the dogs can meet Addison and adjust slowly to her coming into our family.
They are super spoiled (sleep with us, never been to a kennel, included in all family holidays and come with us 90% of the time when we leave the house) I might add I also run the Pug Group in my town so you can tell I am a little crazy about my babies!
This is going to sound weird, but, meh, whatever.
I rescued my chocolate lab just a couple of days before I started to date my EXH. Then, we got a second dog together, so he is their "fur-daddy." We kind of have a shared custody of the dogs... He takes them for a week out of the month or whenever I need him to. (Like if I'm going out of town)
However, it's often hard to get a hold of my EXH or even rely on him for anything in advance, so I will be giving a spare key to the house to my dad, who will come over and feed, water and walk the dogs if I can't get in touch with my EXH, or he can't take them. I know that he's moving at the end of the month, so I'm not sure how his schedule is going to work.
Worst comes to worst, FI can always go home and tend to the dogs. We only live about 15 minutes from the hospital.
