Addicted to Tea!!

Hello all Bumpies! I am a first time mom almost in my 23 week. I have realized that I LOVE tea! I drink AT LEAST 8 tea bags a day and don't worry... Its caffeine free. I can't get enough. pretty sure I will never drink coffee again. Have any of you switched over to the tea side?

 xoxo Kelsey

  • What is Yogi Mommy to be tea? Sounds interesting Confused
  • Me toooo!  I'm normally a coffee, coffee, coffee person.  I still enjoy coffee, but find myself wanting tea more often.

I hope I got back to myself after the kid is born!

  • Yep.  I got addicted to tea when I was pregnant with my daughter and it never really went away.  I still enjoy my coffee daily but I drink a lot more tea than I used to.

  • I'm totally addicted right along with you.  I've always been a coffee-aholic, I quit immediately after finding out I as preggo... but I have a new found love for tea.  I"ve been drinking green tea (decaf) this week, but I do LOVE black tea...english breakfast makes it I think...We had some K cups lying around the office so I indulged in my cup a day.  I still get a little confused on what teas I can drink and what I cannot.  Like we have to be careful with herbal teas, but I'm afraid I'll buy one and not know it's herbal.

  • Have you told your OB this? Not judging at all, 8 bags of tea just seems like a lot of herbs to take in everyday (even if there is no caffeine, some herbs have not been tested or proven safe in pregnancy in large quantities).

Having said that, I used to be a tea addict but stopped drinking it (and coffee) when I got pregnant.  Once I was out of first tri I started to drink peppermint tea a few times a week. The reason I stopped is because there is conflicting research about green tea and other tea herbs (like hibiscus) in pregnancy and I just didn't want to chance it since there are not a lot of studies.

There is some evidence that consuming green tea around the same time as a prenatal vitamin is a bad idea because the compounds in green tea will interfere with folic acid absorption, but no studies have been done to show what damage (if any) there will be. I recall reading in WTEWYE and another book that green tea drinkers should space out their tea drinking and vitamin taking by a few hours to play it safe.

I have read this as well, I guess I am talking more about generally not knowing how herbs affect pregnancy.  Kind of like a class-c drug, you'd take it only if the benefits outweighed the risks since researchers don't know what the risks are. I can't wait to get back to drinking teas regularly though---I had to give away over $100 worth of David's Tea to my SIL when I got pregnant.

  • DH was given a Keurig for Christmas by some parents in his class (teaches 1st grade) and we LOVE it, including the fact that I have been popping the chai lattes in and they are HEAVEN.  Of course, they aren't caffeine free but I do just one thing of caffeine a day (decaf coffee, something chocolate, or this chai.)

Something about the cold weather and a stuffy nose makes chai latte the best drink EVER.

  • I have always been a tea-drinker. My favorites are floral herbals and jasmine. However, one of my cravings with this pregnancy has been coffee... Of all things! Previously I might have had an espresso after a large dinner once a week, but coffee was not part of my daily repertoire. Now I can't get enough. I know caffeine is a touchy subject. What I do to get my fix is pour a small amount of coffee in the bottom of my tea cup, fill the cup with boiling water (as if I'm making tea) and top it off with a splash of milk. I can do this 2 or 3 times a day, and still be drinking less than one whole cup of coffee, so staying in the safe zone with the caffeine.

And in between my coffee fixes, I am still making tea all day and night. I actually steamed off part of the wood paneling in the kitchen above the stove, and had to glue it back on with wood glue! My SO was not amused.

  • I thought this said "Addicted to Teal!" - I am also a fan of teal, but I prefer turquoise.
