Re: Breastfeeding Article - Why doctors can't help

  • I just wished the lactation consultants in the hospital I delivered were honest and tell me it hurts! They led me to believe that, if it hurt - something was wrong. I even spent a very long day and $50 to see an ears, note, & throat specialist when LO was 9 days old to see if he had a tight frenulum, causing pain when nursing and he did not. I finally gave up because no one told me it's supposed to hurt.. and it will hurt for a while... but then it gets better.., and your nipples toughen up and get used to it. No one told me that. We thought something was wrong all along so I started pumping and my supply majorly decreased until, gradually, it was gone when he was 3 months old.

  • Brandy, no one told me either. They pretty much said his latch was good so it must be me.

Yep, me too. I finally asked an older nurse who told me she had 6 kids. When I asked her if I was doing something wrong because it really hurt, she said...

Honey, unless you've had someone sucking on your nipples every 2 hours round the clock for a month, it's gonna hurt like hell.

I appreciated her honesty to say the least!!

  • Yes Great article!  It is so true that most OBs and pedis know next to nothing about breastfeeding!

  • See this is interesting because the LC at the hospital did tell me it was supposed to hurt and I was ready to quit until I called a private LC 175 dollars later, who taught me a correct latch and it was literally painfree. I think it can be if the latch is correct. There will be some mild pain as the nipple is adjusting, but no cracking, bruising or bleeding should happen.
