Parenting after a Loss

Baby Led Weaning?

Has anyone tried this method or plan on doing it to introduce solids to your LO?  A friend of mine is doing it with her son and was talking to me about it this weekend.  The more research I do on it the more it makes sense.  I really don't want to do rice cereal in formula.  I don't know a lot of other moms though that have used this method.  Just looking for some feedback one way or the other!

For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about here is a link to some info:

  • I have two friends who have done it with great success, and we plan on doing it also. It just makes sense. I have heard that a lot of pedis are against rice cereal now too since it doesn't really add much nutrition.

  • I am seriously considering it. I planned on after Christmas (since our holidays are so crazy) to start having at least one meal a day with DD in my lap to begin gauging her interest in food, and just let her have at it once she's ready. If I find any good resources, I'll be sure to share them with you! I did really like this blog:

My MIL keeps pushing me to put rice cereal in B's bottles etc. but I don't plan on introducing it to him at all, which of course I'm getting crap for.  The ride cereal just adds calories and no nutritional value.  He's gaining weight fine with formula and he doesn't need solids until 6 months.  His 4m appointment is on January 7th and I plan on talking to his pediatrician about it then!

  • I did a modified version with DD. I'd say I did 75 Blw with her. When we were home, I did Blw. But I did pre packaged pures when out and about because it was easy to pack in the diaper bag. I also did pured prunes when she had constipation issues. Or if we went to a Mexican restaurant, I would spoon feed her bites of the guac because I didn't want to deal with the mess while at the restaurant if I let her eat it by herself.

She had preemie related anemia, so I did put oatmeal in her BM bottle to get extra iron in her.

However since DS was born at term and doesn't have that issue, I'm not doing any cereal with him.

I don't know if it was the Blw, or just DD's personality, but she is not a picky toddler when it comes to eating. She's a lover of all foods, except oranges.

OP: when doing Blw, keep in mind that LO will gag. Gagging is not choking. Choking is silent. Gagging is not. Gagging is normal and encouraged. The gag reflex on a baby is located towards the front of the mouth. Unlike in an adult where it is located in the back near the tonsils. Gagging is a normal process where they figure out what food is too big and how to move the food in their mouth so they don't choke later on.

I haven't read the stats on this claim, but some blwers claim that babies who were Blw had a less incidence of choking as a toddler or child because they learned what and how stuff gets put in the mouth.

  • I did a combo. I made all of DD's baby food and did some baby-led weaning. What I tried to focus on was letting her feed herself as much as possible. This worked great and she was mostly feeding herself by 8 months. We started solids about 5 and a half months. Chunks of avocado and banana and then organic puffs worked great as first items she could grab and eat herself.

  • We did oatmeal then purees at 6 months with Em. We only did oatmeal for 3 or 4 days before starting purred. Oatmeal was mixed in a bowl with expressed BM. And then we started puress mixed with oatmeal. She started feeding herself at 7 months with a spoon. And we started table food at 9 months. She did great and is an awesome eater.

It has been a rare occurrence that DD will begin to choke on something. And usually it's b/c of an odd scenario. She does great eating most things and I've never really had to worry about her that way.

  • I didn't really do traditional BLW but we didn't do rice cereal and used organic oatmeal instead. DD loved it. We did purees that I made for a couple months but she was over them so she got pretty much all finger food after that. I would say by 8m. Even now we notice that she eats much better at the same time and same food as us.

  • We did it. Mostly because Miss Independent had absolutely zero interest in anyone pushing food into her mouth on a spoon. So BLW it was.  We had no problems with it at all and she's been self feeding since she started solids. It actually made our lives easier because we could always eat when she ate and not have to feed her then us, which frankly, we don't have time to do! My mother made a gallant effort to make her own purees (she kept B for us when I went back to work) but quickly discovered the same conclusion we had made, it wasn't worth the effort.

This! She mostly gets pieces of whatever I'm eating but she does get those pouches because she can feed herself. If I got those spoon things she wouldn't eat it. My mom won't give up and just tells me I'm doing it wrong when I spoon feed her, shows me how and of course DD takes just enough bites off the spoon that my mom is proven right.

There's no rule that says you can't do whatever you want- purees and chunks, spoons and BLW, etc. Just figure out what works and go with it. Don't stress about following something exactly by the book. There's no point!

  • I loved the wholesome baby food website, the charts were really helpful. We started DS slowly on solids about 5 months with the oatmeal and banana from Gerber with BM. I sometimes would mash real banana in there. We first tried the rice cereal and it was the only thing he couldn't keep down. Used a lot of pured food like squash, peas, carrots. Today he will eat just about anything.
