*Taking a break*
Baby-sitters club, Family Ties, Sliders (this scifi show from the 90s) had a male Mallory in the later seasons - it came from a last name (the character was originally a guy named Quinn Mallory)
I definitely hear Michael J Fox saying it. Followed by Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross with that exasperated tone.
It's ok, but I kind of hate the nn Mal on a girl.
I don't like it much. I don't care for the meaning, or the sound. I really love Melanie, which is somewhat similar, if you need other ideas.
lizzybean:All I can think of is Babysitters Club!
This. I have never heard the name anywhere else and don't really like it. I dislike that a nn could be Mall or Mal (meaning bad in a lot of langauges) and it seems like it fits in better with the jennifers and ashleys of the 80's then anything else.

EmarieDuke:I am not a fan of this name. It bugged me as a kid too, I always thought it sounded funny, kind of dorky. Which I can't figure out because I do like Valerie, but I think the harder sound of the V compared the M helps. I guess it's just NMS.
