I have a fourth grade student who just started with me. The name, Ryan. I assumed it was a boy. Now mind you this is a whole class of new kids for me, so no way to tell which child it was. As I'm going down my list I call out Ryan. She raises her hand, bright red in the face and says "I go by my middle name, Aubrey". She tells me afterwards to please not call her Ryan again because it is embarrassing to have a boys name. This is not to say that it's bad for all, just that some kids will not grow up to have the confidence to support an opposite gender name.
