Another weight gain post...

I just wanted to say, that I have gained about 15-17lbs so far...

Every weight gain post I have seen so far has women posting about the fact that they have only gained 1-5lbs. I just wanted to put it out there that I'm kind of on the other end of the spectrum...and see if any other women have gained about the same as me. (I know every woman is different).

I was self-conscious about it and shocked when my doctor told me how much I'd gained at my 20 week appointment yesterday...I'm heavier than I've ever been and it was hard to swallow seeing that number on the scale.

BUT, hopefully I won't gain more than 15lbs for the rest of the pregnancy...

 Anyone else in my boat??

Re: Another weight gain post...

  • I have gained about the same if not more.  I am trying to slow it down, but geez I felt like crap my first trimester and had horrible nausea unless I was actively eating.  I was skinny before this pregnancy and I know I have kind of indulged a little too much, but oh well.  I am not worried.  I am walking now and making better choices with eating so I hope it all evens out.  As long as my bp stays normal and I can get around I am not going to worry about it.  My doctor hasn't said anything yet.
  • Did you have normal weight before you got pregnant? If you're normally within a healthy weight range, I don't think 15 pounds is that much at 20 weeks. I've only gained a few pounds, but I'm overweight and the doc told me she didn't want me gaining more than 20 lbs total this pregnancy. I think as long as your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either! I know that it's still hard not to think about it, though! I weigh more than I have ever weighed, too, but for some reason seeing and touching that bump somehow makes me be ok with the extra weight :D

  • I have gained 18 lbs so far. My m/s was bad unless I was eating. It has finally slowed down so I can eat a little less. I am also hoping I dont gain more than 15 lbs for the rest of the time. I dont know why but I am much more worried this time than with DD about my weight. I guess its because with DD I lost alot in the beginning. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. Doctor hasnt said anything to me so I guess they are not worried.

  • Thank The Lord for this post. I thought for sure it would be another "only two lbs" post and almost didn't open it.  I'm over it. I've been seeing this on Facebook too much.  I have also gained 15+ lbs at 19 weeks.  I actually had a hormonal meltdown after the last appt because I was afraid I was gaining too much. And no,  not out of vanity reasons, out of "am I doing what's best for baby and my health reasons."  I've talked to a lot of women since and hear that "we are all different." And will gain different. And that's okay. My docs aren't concerned and I was "normal weight" before.

  • I have gained 14lbs as of last week at my 17 week appointment. I had a meltdown with the doc but she reassured me that I am doing nothing wrong. By 17 weeks with my last pregnancy I had gained about the same, possibly more.
  • I've gained 18 pounds, although I'm having twins. I've been eating tons. I agree with all the PPs that if your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either!

  • I've gained around 9 to 10 lbs at 19 weeks. It changes daily. I gained 35 last pregnancy and my mw was perfectly fine with it.

  • PP I was 10 pounds overweight. At my 16 week appt I had gained 10 pounds. We go back on the 28th and I wouldn't be surprised if I'd gained at least 8 more we don't own a scale, on purpose.
As long as dr isn't concerned, we shouldn't be either.

  • Loving this thread!

I had a check-up today at 17w3d and my weight was up 19lbs from my reported pre-pregnancy weight. It fluctuates a few pounds depending on the day and time and who knows what other factors. Anyway, like some PPs said, I had a meltdown at my last appointment about gaining too much weight. I brought it up and the midwife was basically just like everyone is different and said that I should try to eat better and exercise more. This time I didn't say anything and neither did the doctor, so I figure it must be fine. I've gained about 5lbs since my last appointment.

I'm over worrying about it. I've heard of plenty of other women who gain more at the beginning and less at the end of their pregnancies. I have been eating better and exercising more the past month, and I plan on doing even better in the new year.

  • I am average height and weight and gained 50lbs last pregnancy. And then I had the baby and lost 50 lbs.

Seriously, don't try to restrict yourself to ensure you ONLY gain 15 more lbs in the next 5 months.  The 2nd tri is when weight gain kicks in...just be healthy.  And throw the scales out the window.

  • Yep, I'm right around there with you ;). My OBGYN isn't concerned bc I am only 2 lbs above a healthy BMI for my height at this weight but I'm still packin' on the pounds.

  • I am on the same path. I am usually in the "normal weight" range for my height but I gained 12 lbs when I weighed myself last Saturday at 16 weeks.  More than one person has said, wow, it's more "obvious" than I thought it would be.  It's literally all in my belly, so it sticks out hugely...  I only go into my office occasionally, so when people see me who haven't in a while, they are shocked at my protrusion!  I expect to have gained another 2-3 lbs this weekend but am hoping it slows down a bit.  My next appointment is just after Christmas, so I'll see if doc has anything to say about it...

I gained 38lbs with DS, but I was 6 years younger then, so I am hoping that I don't gain that much this time.  It took me three years to lose the last 10 lbs...

  • I was technically over weight by a few pounds, and ended up LOSING weight during my first trimester, which was extremely frustrating for me, but my doctor and mother (RN) said that it is completely normal in your first.

I got down to 155 from 167 in my first trimester and then started putting on healthier weight in the right places around 13 weeks.

19 weeks now, and I'm 162! and I look totally different, my weight is proportionate (which is bizarre to me), except I am starting to grow out of my bras :P

  • Thank you for this for this post! I have been getting anxiety reading all the posts about "why haven't I gained any weight??" or "I have only gained 1lb." At my 16 week appointment I gained about 8-9 pounds. I have my 20 week appt next week and I'm sure I have gained 2-3 more. Whats even worse is when I asked my dr about it at my 16 week appt she proceeded to tell me that most women at this point lose weight, but that she also wasn't concerned that I had gained. I am pretty small to begin with. I broke down crying to H that night, since then I have cut out most of the refined carbs from diet and I think that has helped a lot. I am just focusing on being really healthy for the baby, but still indulging occasionally and and remind my self I will lose it after the baby!

  • I have been having a hard time with this.  I am 5'1" and weighed about 117-118 before I got pregnant and now I weigh about 125-126 (at 17wks 1 day); so I have gained about 8 pounds.  I was very active before, but went through fertility treatments and was advised to stick to walk instead of the running/weight training I had been doing, which doesn't help how I am feeling.  I had gotten the okay to start exercising more normally again, but after a couple days of running I had a little bit of spotting, which freaked me and DH out and OB told me to take a break...and then I tried to do some modified weight training (Les Mills BodyPump), but it was right around when my RLP started, so again, my OB told me to take it easy.  What makes things even worse...is that my OB said 16-20 pounds was all I should gain!  As you can tell, my BMI was pretty much right in the middle of normal weight range, so hearing "you should only gain 16 pounds" won't get out of my head.  If that is the case, I have gained half my weight already, I have JUST hit the point where I should start gaining rapidly and I cannot fathom that I will only gain 8 more pounds in the next 23 weeks.  I know that 16-20 is low for what the recommendation is, but since my OB seems to think that is all I should gain, I feel like she is judging my weight everytime I go.  Also...this in between phase is killing me.  To the rest of the world I look like I have just gained some weight (again, very noticeable on a shorter frame) and like I am squeezing into clothes that are too small for me, but I am not big enough to really be wearing maternity clothes.  I never understood when people that were pregnant made comments about how "fat" they were.  I always thought to myself "No.  You are growing a baby; you are NOT fat..." and I just didn't understand their mindset.  Now I completely understand where that was coming from, but having always had body image issues, I can't seem to take my own advice and just relax.  As I said, we went through fertility treatments and there was a while when I thought I would not be able to get pregnant at all, so I am INCREDIBLY thankful that I am where I am; I just wish I wasn't feeling so anxious about my weight....
  • I had an early miscarriage the month before this pregnancy and had gained about 5 pounds from that and then an additional 5 lbs from being depressed so I was already 10 pounds up from my normal weight.  I got pregnant again right away and have gained 9lbs from my first visit (which is good) but I am really up 19 from my normal weight.  It is hard but I eat right and I exercise regularly so I know I am doing everything I can to have a healthy baby and pregnancy but I know how devestating the number on the scale can be.

  • Thank you ladies for your input...I feel better hearing it!

I also wanted to add...(as I don't dare put up another weight gain post lol)..the fact that at my 12 week appointment I had a nurse midwife who is also a nutrition specialist and probably weighs 95lbs soaking wet. She was hyper-focused on nutrition and me NOT gaining more than 15lbs during pregnancy.

I'm 5'3" and I have a short torso, so in conjunction with my bloat, I started showing much earlier than many...and now my organs simply have no where to be so I'm compact but I'm packin' a hefty lookin' baby-carrier!  Anyway, back to my 12 week appointment...she made me feel so weird and looked at my belly strange and asked how far along I actually was...(even though she knew). I told her that I hadn't been eating a lot/unhealthily and that I am fairly active and she proceeded to tell me that "I definitely need to be extremely careful during my pregnancy. That I should NOT gain more than 15 lbs. She went on and on about how I should really start working out more and it's a concern that my belly was so big so early.

Now, just so you are all aware, I started out pre-pregnancy around 135 (which admittedly is a little heavier than I like to be at 5'3") BUT..I had only gained 5 lbs at this appointment..so I was totally confused why she was talking to me like I had a serious weight issue and was at risk for gestational diabetes. I cried after my appointment and couldn't help felt like she robbed me of the excitement of my first real ultrasound/prenatal appointment with my husband because it was so overly focused on my "odd weight gain"...My husband was videotaping the ultrasound...and the whole time she's doing it, you can hear her saying "yeahhhh...I don't know!! so weird about your belly. I can't really explain it. I think you just need to eat healthier and work out more".

I was really upset about it.

At my 16 week appointment however, I had another midwife and I told her of my experience with her colleague and she was very compassionate and told me not to worry about a thing, that I am not trying to be a pregnant barbie...I'm making a child and she thinks I look great!  That made it a little better. :)

People can be so damn insensitive.

    Anyway...WE'RE HAVING BABIES SOOOOOON!! WOOHOOOO! :) <3

I think it's unfair that women of all different body types are expected to gain weight the same way while pregnant. It's very frustrating.

     Totally! Can we LIVE???

Wow. This floors me. I've NEVER heard that an average sized woman should only gain 15 lbs. Thats crazy! And to say your belly is abnormal? WTF!! I am short too and my organs have been protruding for quite some time. Everytime someone comments on the size of my belly I say, ummm, that's my organs!! And to say you need to work out cuz your belly is getting big??? You're f'ing pregnant!!!! Wow. Sorry you went thru this!
