MH drinks & smokes, and in the long run, I am obviously most worried about his health, but my immediate concerns are on how much it might affect TTC.
I should preface by saying his drinking is not a problem in our relationship (at least not at this point). He comes home from work and enjoys a few beers, more on the weekends if he feels like it. He never misses work, is not an angry drunk and generally just drinks for fun. The thing is, a year and a half ago, I went to rehab for alcohol abuse/dependency (almost 2 years sober!) so I think my opinion of what is normal might now be distorted. And before anyone brings it up, he drinks beer, which I never enjoyed when I drank. Vodka was my poison and we never have hard liquor in the house.
As for the smoking, that's my main concern. I've searched online and read all sorts of opinions and research on how much smoking & drinking can affect TTC. It seems to me that smoking is the big one for causing problems with sperm. I also used to smoke but quit 2 years ago on a whim (just decided I didn't want to do it anymore). DH has said a few times now that when I get pregnant, he will quit smoking. I just wish he would decide to quit now. I know that pushing someone to quit something doesn't help, you have to be ready to do it on your own. I am really glad that I am healthy as can be, but I'm not sure if DH's vices are something I should be concerned about now as far as TTC is concerned.
Have any of you had any experience with your DH quitting while TTC? Is it not something I should worry about until we've been TTC for a year? Tell me your stories, and advice is much needed!
