Teacher having trouble with names...

I've only been teaching 2 years, so every student I've taught still has quite an impact on me. It's becoming a problem in our name quest. Every time we think of one we like, it brings a memory of a student I've encountered!! I'm trying to convince myself that once I have a baby, they will be the first one I think of and not an old student!! It's just driving me crazy!!

Anyone else having name problems because you associate it with someone else?!

Re: Teacher having trouble with names...

  • Well the good thing is that since you've only been teaching for 2 years there aren't too many names on your no go list.

I was a teacher, and there are definitely names I associate with students and would never name my kids [usually the rotten ones] ;o] but I wouldn't have a problem using the name of a kid I likes.

And really, unless you name your kid speshulina there is already someone with their name.

  • I have said no to a couple of names H likes purely because of association.
  • I work in child welfare, so I totally see where you're coming from!

  • Yes!  I'm in my 8th year of teaching and names that I use to love, I won't even think twice about naming our babies anymore.  Ever since I was little I loved the name Justin but after this year, never, ever, will I use that name.  ;) I completely understand how you feel!

  • I ruled out many names with our first based on associations from teaching. (Not always just the kid's name - sometimes it was the parent). We found a name we loved, I'd never had one in class and it was settled. Wouldn't you know the very next year, a little girl with that name ends up in my class.

  • I've been teaching for 9 years and I can't even begin to tell you how many names I've liked in the past, but have been ruined by a student.  Luckily my last two years, I've taught in the hood, so I was never planning on using Millenium or Pepsi. lol

  • I've been teaching for 7 years and there's a truckload of names that are off the table. For some strange reason, in naming our son the name didn't set off any alarm bells. However, last year I taught 3 Matthews that were just crazy! It prompted me to wonder, did fate have me name him Matthew because I "knew" he'd be a spirited kid, or did I doom him to a life if being a"crazy" Matthew because if the name I gave him. Either way, the name still seems to fit.
Oh and our girl name is actually the name of a girl I taught before and I instantly loved her and the name.
  • I'm having a same problem!

    Pronounced L-Dash-A

    For serious.

  • I totally feel your pain. I'm a nurse, and I have had horrible patients that have completely ruined names for me forever. Every day I go into work now, and one of my new patients has a name that I like, I get agitated because I know I will just associate the name with that patient. It stinks!

  • Ooooooh yes.  i've been teaching for 10 years in a "difficult" neighbourhood and i teach kids with severe behaviour disorders (kids that throw fits and punches and chairs). For some reason several names show up again and again in my classroom (Logan...Joshua...Damon...Nicholas...Austin...and any name ending with an "en"). The list of names i won't go near is very long.  My husband is already frustrated with me, haha.

i also want nothing to do with names that are in the top 50 for North America, but that's just me.
