1st Trimester

Rough go (Long)

I just feel like getting it all out there.

It all started two weeks ago. I woke up at two in the morning to go to the bathroom and found blood on the toilet paper. I told myself to relax because it was just a little bit of blood and spotting is common. I got myself a bottle of cold water and I laid flat on my back with my feet up for half an hour and then went to check again. There was no blood this time so I just went to sleep. At six a.m. I got up again and found my panties were wet with blood and it was dark red this time. I immediately called my doctor's answering service. The doctor on call told me to do what I thought was best. So I went to the hospital. They whisked be back right away and stuck me in a room for two hours without anyone coming to check on me and without a doctor coming to see me. Finally my sister got to the hospital and started bullying the nurses because, at that point, I'd been laying down for hours with no help and I was so thirsty I was nauseous. They refused to give me anything to drink and waited another hour before giving me fluids in an IV and some nausea medicine. At this point the doctor still had not come to see me. Finally the doctor came in and told me they were going to do blood work and give me an ultrasound. The nurse who drew my blood screwed up big time and got blood everywhere and left bruises all over me. It was several more hours before they did the ultrasound and they had me give them a urine sample right before they sent me. The tech looked at me and said "Did you just go to the bathroom?" and I explained they had me give a urine sample. She then said she couldn't see anything because my bladder was empty and now they had to do a vaginal ultrasound. And then they waited another hour and a half before they told me my baby was fine, had a strong heartbeat, and that I had a small urinary tract infection and I could go home with antibiotics. They told me to take it easy until my UTI went away but I should be fine.

I got through my antibiotics and noticed spotting and bleeding again so I called my doctor who told me she needed to see me that day (about a week later) so I made my appointment and rushed over. (I absolutely love my doctor, she's so phenomenal). She gave me an ultrasound right there to measure the baby and heartbeat and checked to see if my UTI was resolved. She said I had a blood clot next to the baby's placenta, that the people at the hospital noted on my chart but did not tell me!, and I needed to be on complete bed rest until further notice. Now I have to have an ultrasound every two weeks (which I don't mind as I love to see my baby) but I really wish that if it was such a big complication, the people at the hospital would have told me so I would've been more aware. I also discovered they gave me the wrong antibiotics and my UTI has not been resolved.

Since then I have developed the flu and the strongest thing I'm allowed to take is Tylenol, which I puke up right after taking it. On top of it all, my morning sickness is so bad I've been steadily losing weight every week. In just this last week alone I've lost 10 pounds. I feel like the worst mom ever because I can't keep down any food or medicine, including my prenatal vitamins, not even my nausea pills. I feel like I'm the unhealthiest pregnant woman on the planet lol and I'm just wondering, when am I ever going to get to enjoy being pregnant?!

If you got this far, thanks for your time and attention, much appreciated!

Re: Rough go (Long)

  • You are definitely not the unhealthiest mom! In fact you are awesome for doing so much to take care of you LO!

However, you need to call your doctor about losing so much weight in a week. There are different medications for nausea you can try and you may need IV fluids if you are dehydrated. I would say its worth a call to the on call doctor.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon! *hugs!*

  • So sorry to hear about all the problems you are having.  I'm only 7 1/2 weeks along, and feel pretty crappy, so I understand not being able to enjoy being pregnant.  I had a very similar experience as far as the bleeding.  About a week ago, I was bleeding pretty heavily.  Called the Dr and they also told me it was up to me if I wanted to go to the hospital or not (it was a Saturday).  I couldn't spend the whole weekend not knowing if I had a miscarriage or not.  At that point, I thought I did (this is my first pregnancy).  I went to the hospital, and thank God, everything is ok. They even saw the baby's heartbeat, which was awesome since it was so early.  I guess my point in telling you this is... you're not alone. Unfortunately, all I heard about pregnancy before I actually was pregnant was that it all goes completely smoothly... no hiccups... but that's not true for a lot of people.  Also, I have learned through prior medical experiences that you have to be your own advocate, because no Dr will care about your health or baby as much as you care about your health and baby.  Don't beat yourself up for not being able to keep things down. You are doing the best you can.  Keep your chin up, I am sure everything will be fine :)
  • First of all, you're not a bad Mom. You are doing the best you can do. It's not your fault the hospital staff messed up. I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. Are you in America or Canada? I assume everyone on here is American... if you are, can you ask if you're allowed B6 with Unisom (it's called Dicletin in Canada) or Zofran? Those are thought to be safe during pregnancy for nausea meds as far as I know.

Most of us here are not having a good time either. I was almost hospitalized due to the severity of my nausea as well. I was throwing up and I hadn't eaten/drank in a week, so my body was throwing up nothing but whatever was left over in my stomach. It was awful and I was starving but couldn't eat. I was crying all day, everyday until I finally got some Dicletin.

Talk to your doctor about this, but maybe lay off the prenatals and stick with folic acid and DHA pills instead. I had to stop my prenatals because they made me sick too. The iron in them can make women feel nauseous - plus, they are so effing big!!!!

It will go away soon. I am 11 weeks as well and everyone keeps telling me it will get better soon. Hang in there and do what you can. Can  you eat at all??? if you can, try some oatmeal, or granola bars - something with substance other than crackers. Have you tried ginger tea?? I had some and it did wonders for me :) if not ginger, then peppermint... tea can help settle a stomach.

anyways.. I hope this helps a little. sorry you're having a rough time :( hang in there.

  • What a rough time you are having! You are definitly not a bad mom, just a pregnant mommy going through a tough time, doing the best you can. Its hard when your body is fighting back at you.  Ask your Dr. if you are ok for homeopathic remedies for nausea. I take nux vomica in a 30c and it has helped me completely with both sickness and dizziness.  mildly sweet tasting tabs that dissolve under the tounge, so it doesnt mess with my tummy. I dont have much for feedback, I just think its great that you can vent and we can read and feel compassion for another pregnant woman out there! Have compassion on yourself too! When you are feeling up to it go treat yourself to a new maternity outfit or a massage or whatever you want because you deserve it.

  • What a crappy start! Hopefully things will turn around soon, and you'll only remember the good parts. :) You've still got quite awhile to go.

  • I'm so sorry you've had such a rough time! You are not an unhealthy momma, just a momma going through a heck of a time!

I'm not sure if it works the same way in your area, but in my area, we are directed to go to L&D for anything deemed a pregnancy emergency (like heavy bleeding). The reason is, the main ER's job is to stabalize injury and keep you alive. L&D's whole gig is babies and birth. So they are better versed in taking care of a pregnant woman and the doctors on staff in L&D will better know how to take care of you.

I'm glad to hear you have an excellent dr. that you love. Don't be afraid to call or visit her to help find a remedy for the nausea- there are lots of different things out there to help.

Lastly- on the bleeding note, I had some spotting in early first tri with DD and a huge amount of BRB in later first tri, they never really figured out why, but DD arrived healthy and wonderful, so it all worked out. :) I know that's not always the case, but I just wanted to share a positive story. As for your bleeding, it sounds like they found the culprit, and SHAME on the ER for not telling you that. Yay for more ultrasounds though! :)

     Hang in there!

  • I just wanted to say I am so sorry to hear you have been going through so much!  It seems like it rains, it pours - but maybe since you've tackled a bunch of pitfalls all at once, now you're smooth sailing through the rest of your pregnancy!
