Squirrel just fell from a tree

DH and I were standing on our back porch when we heard this rustling around and then a huge thud from the neighbor's yard.  This poor little squirrel fell from the tree right in front of us.  He appears stunned.  He can move the top half of his body but it' looks like he broke something..back legs, hips...not sure.

We have an SPCA but they closed at 5.  Is there any other clinics that repair wild animals?  I just feel sick watching him suffer out there and I'm so afraid one of our other neighbor's outdoor cats will get him.

Re: Squirrel just fell from a tree

  • Ohhhhh poor little thing. You can search online and see if there is a wildlife rescue in your area. I know we have one in our area with a 24 hour on-call service. If not, you can probably put the little guy in a box with a towel and some water to keep him comfortable and cat-free over night. Use gardening or other leather gloves while handling the little guy so you don't get bit. GL sweetie.

  • Things are looking a little better.  It looks like his left leg may be broken but he moved around a bit and started to climb up a tree.  When he was a little way up his mother came and grab him by the back of the neck and took him over to some large pine trees.  At least I don't have to worry about the cats getting him.

  • Thank NMscubagirl.  I'll definitely check out a Wildlife Rescue.  This kind of thing has happened before and I didn't know what to do then.  Hopefully next time I'll be better prepared.

  • Poor little guy! I volunteer at a wildlife rescue center and we get squirrels of all sizes for endless various reasons. They are the cutest search online for your county or neighboring county wildlife center just in case you need to make an urgent call in the future. Your local SPCA would have theIr contact Info as well. : :
