Trouble TTC

Trying to conceive with Clomid

I have been off from BC for about 11 months now without becoming pregnant. My SO and I have been seriously trying to conceive for about 4-5 months with no success. I just started my second round of Clomid (50mg) and am excited to see what happens. Thankfully I haven't had any bad side effects from the medication and have had a regular cycle with my progesterone levels increased from the previous blood test. We have been quite discouraged because after a year of not preventing pregnancy, it hasn't happened.

Does anyone have an suggestions or stories they would like to share? I would love to hear about your experiences with clomid.

Re: Trying to conceive with Clomid

  • I have had 5 cycles of clomid - My 2nd one resulting in a chemical pregnancy. And then my last two were done in conjunction with back to back IUIs. Sorry I dont have better news for ya. Looking into IVF next cycle. As far as side effects, the only one that I really get is hot flashes. Other then that the drug doesnt seem that bad. Good luck!!!

  • I am waiting to O on my 4th cycle of clomid. Each cycle is so different! I have had awful side effects one month, and zero the next. Night sweats/hot flashes are the only steady issue... but I consider that a MINOR problem! I don't have a success story YET but, I went from 50-100 day cycles to 33-35 day cycles thanks to clomid and I had 7 follies this cycle! Are you having a midcycle ultra sound?

  • Have you had all your testing? CD3 b/w & u/s and and an HSG? Has your DH had a SA?

Is your progesterone done 7dpo or CD21?

I only ask because there are a lot of women who are prescribed Clomid by their OB's w/o proper diagnostic testing and/or monitoring.

This link has a lot of good information:

W/ all that out of the way. I didn't ovulate on 50mg and I did on 100mg. I had more side effects on 50 though, hot flashes and I was a little cranky while I was taking it and for the few days after.

    Good Luck!

  • It seems a little premature for you to be on clomid right now with only 4-5 months of serious trying. It can take up to a year of planned trying to become pregnant if both of you are healthy. Clomid should not be taken lightly, and has a 6 cycle lifetime max. I hope you take the time to educate yourself about what kinds of medications you are putting in your body without knowing if you actually even need them.
Patiently waiting for our 1st since 9/2010.
Dealing with MFI, good count, good motility, 3% morph-HSG all clear, all other test results came back normal, IUI is our next step
    May 2012- Clomid 50mg + IUI = BFN
    June- Cycle Break
July- Forced cycle break due to cysts
    August- Femara, Trigger, IUI#2= ?

  • Thank you for the information. Is there a reason why they haven't increased the amount of clomid you are taking. Just out of curiousity. My doctor said if I did not conceive this time, she was going to be increasing the dose. I am thankful though because it seems to be regulating my cycle at least.

How well are you responding to the dosage you are on?

  • We have been trying for a year but starting exploring our options with our OB/GYN about 4-5 months ago because we were not having success while trying to conceive. Since this is the beginning of my 2nd round, I am not sure how I am responding. I just know that there is an increase in my progesterone levels. I had the bloodwork on CD 3 and CD 21 last month but nothing was mentioned about have an ultrasound done mid-cycle. My DH hasn?t had a SA because they wanted to try 3 months of clomid first. Since I wasn?t ovulating regularly, she wanted to get my issue under control and go from there.

You should be having u/s to make sure you aren't developing a cyst. It is a very real side effect. I know a women who had no pain or anything and was taking Clomid (from an RE) and when she was at her yearly OB appointment he felt something and when he did an u/s found a softball sized cyst from Clomid that caused her to have her one Ovary removed.

You also need an u/s to know you aren't over responding and have 3 or more mature follicles. If you are developing 3 or more folicles on a lower dosage and your OB doubles your dosage it could be a bad thing. You don't want to be brownstar +8.

You should have an HSG, if your tubes are blocked and you do 3 cycles of Clomid to find out they were worthless you have wasted 3 cycles of your 6 max.

ETA: I agree w/ PP about the SA. I learned the hard way. I wasted 2 cycles on Clomid before DH did his testing to find he has severe MFI and I can't get those cycles back and they were never going to work.

Im with PP about getting tested- HSG and SA. You are wasting time and money if you or your DH has a issue.

  • I've done two clomid cycles. I am actually on a break this cycle because the clomid caused a large cyst on my right ovary. The only symptom I has was a slight twinge on that side, but I had no idea what was going on until we saw it on the ultrasound. During my two cycles the only major side effect I had was a constant headache.

Also, DH and I had full workups before we began clomid. His SA was good, but we found out one of my tubes was blocked. I am so thankful I found this board and learned about testing procedures before I wasted a medicated cycle.

Me: 31, DH: 33 Dx PCOS
5/12 -- HSG, blocked left tube cleared, cycle canceled b/c of cyst
    6/12 -- Clomid 100mg + TI -- BFN
    7/12 -- Clomid 100mg + TI + Progesterone -- BFN
    8/12 -- Benched with a cyst
    10/12 -- Clomid 100mg + TI -- BFN
    11/12 -- Clomid 100mg + Trigger + TI -- BFN
    12/12 -- Clomid 100mg + Trigger + IUI -- BFN

  • you need to be monitored via ultrasounds mid cycle (usually every other day til you ovulate) to make sure you are even ovulating..you are taking clomid, and YOU DON"T EVEN KNOW IF ITS WORKING.

Also, you may be ovulating on your own and not need clomid..and why aren't you going to a fert specialist ..an OB or gyn should not be giving you clomid.

You also need to do all the tests...we did an investigative cycle (after a miscarriage and almost a year of trying) and the put me on clomid 50 mg and timed intercourse via ultrasound and blood work telling me when I ovulate. I already ovulate every month on my own, so I was really annoyed they put me on Clomid for no reason as far as I could see. Anyway, we did 2 cycles of clomid and I got pregnant the second try..I attribute this more to the timed intercourse than the clomid to be honest, because they told us exactly when to have sex so it was a no brainer.

Anyway, I guess clomid is super intense on your body..and you only get a few cycles on it in your LIFE so I wouldn't waste my time on it if you don't know what's going on and if you aren't being monitored. and other posters have talked about cysts. you need to get this crap tracked via ultrasounds.

I am currently 2 weeks away from having my baby...so honestly, get the tests done, and you will get results so much faster than just winging it with an OB or gyn
