'Newborn Rash' Question

I just got home today from the hospital with my LO and he is covered in what looks like little tiny zits. The nurse I asked said this is normal and will clear up on its own... anyone else dealing with this or have any suggestions?
They don't seem to be bothering him but they look like they might be sore.

thanks

Re: 'Newborn Rash' Question

  • My LO had something similar, though not until she was a few weeks old. It wasn't baby acne, but a rash of some kind.. I can't remember the name for it. They didn't bother her at first either, but then after a week or so they became really itchy. She would scratch her face and roll her head around (they started to show up on her neck and the base of her skull when it was really bad) against whatever she was laying against.. The pediatrician gave us some 1% Hydrocortisone lotion with instructions to apply it twice a day until her rash disappeared. He said the rash would go, then come back after a few days and we would treat it again, and that it would continue to do that bu the time between treatments would lengthen until she stopped having trouble with it. So far he's been right. We are going a few weeks between applications of the lotion, and it doesn't get nearly as bad as it was. We see a few bumps pop up and we apply the lotion once and it's gone.

  • My DD has it as well. It started with a little baby acne on the cheeks/face. I'm think she may also have a touch of eczema since it is also on her upper chest and neck areas

ours started the day we left the hospital.  the nurses told us to put nothing on it and it would clear on its own.  it was 90% gone in two to three days

This for us too! It started out looking like baby acne and then spread to her back and chest, then to her arms. She seemed super fussy, so I took her to the doctor and he prescribed the cream. It's gone for the most part now. Save yourself some money and just go buy some 1% cortisone cream!

  • is it milia? it starts as a red spot with a white dot in the middle. once the redness goes away they white spot stays? they dry up and clear up on they're own. totally normal. ds's was gone in about a week and it really didn't seem to other him at all. but then the baby acne showed up!

  • Excellent - thank you everyone.
I'll leave it be for another day or two to see if it clears up, but in the meantime I'll grab a tube of lotion. I did get one interesting piece of advice from my health nurse today - she said to put breast milk on them and it'll help clear them up.
I tried it on some on his face and they're already less red!

  • I wouldn't put lotion on it! My son had it and lotion made it worse (I used Aveeno excema cream). What helped wasusurping him down with a warm, wet washcloth on his skin (no soap) once a day.
