reflux/cereal in bottle

My daughter is on Zantac and it worked for 7 weeks but now her symptoms are flaring up again.  I want to try cereal in her bottle before we up her medication.  Has any of your LOs been successful in combating the reflux with cereal? If so, how much do you put in the bottle?  TIA!

Re: reflux/cereal in bottle

  • She probably gained weight and outgrew her Zantac dosage. Before trying cereal, I would talk to your pedi.

This exactly. Cereal didn't work for us, increasing the dosage did.

  • Zantac didn't work for our son, we had to change to Nexium our poor little guy had an upper GI today and confirmed today reflux.

  • Zantac only worked 5 weeks for us and then he was put on prilosec.  This seemed to help but he was still having really bad days.  We started rice cereal in his bottle and it was a huge improvement.  My doctor recommended 1 tsp per ounce of milk.  I heard that the rice cereal could be kind of constipating so we only put 2 tsp in his 5 oz bottles.  The 2 tsp helped soo much!  However, now he constipated and will only poop if we give him juice or a suppository.  As of yesterday we stopped the cereal all together.  It worked so well but we couldn't handle the constipation.  I felt so bad for him because he'd get cranky from stomach pains.  I hope it works for you.  We successfully did this for 6 weeks.

  • We had the same issue.  We were taking Zantc twice a day.  Our pedi had me add oatmeal to the fomula.  One teason per ounce.  This helped a great deal.  Then we started on solids (apples and pears) to help with constipation.  We have now backed off on the zantac to once a day.  It's working for us.  Good luck!
  • My son has the same thing. Hes doing zantac and pedi told us to put cereal in bottle and its done wonders!! My pedi said 1 tsp for every 2 oz of formula
  • Zantac never worked for us and the pedi would not give us anything stronger but he said we could put cereal in the bottle. We started doing this when he was 5 weeks old. At that time we were only giving him 4 oz and we would put 1tsp to 2 tsp in the bottle. It worked great for the reflux, he hardly ever spit up when we did that. However, it did constipate him which was almost worse than the reflux so we stopped. Every baby is different though. Also, you will probably have to up the nipple size because it will be thicker.

  • my daughter had a ugi test not too long ago, and it came out negative for reflux, however, she spits up constantly. we give her oatmeal and bananas and nothing seems to help.her pediatrician says its normal, but i feel otherwise. im running out of things to try. bottles, formula, burping. nothing works. im at my wits end with it.
