What went wrong

on your wedding day?

Anything?

I was hot hot hot, the entire day. The air in the town car we rented didn't work very well. Then we took a million pictures outside. Halfway through the reception the air conditioner at the venue broke! I didn't let it ruin the day, but damm I was hot.

You?

Re: What went wrong

  • DH and I got married July 10, 2010. It was also very hot...so hot in fact, that our cake collapsed!

Yep! It looked terrible...but I didn't care :) We were married and what did the status of a bunch of flour, sugar, and water mean anyway :)

It makes for a funny story! It was definitely memorable!

  • 45 minutes before our outdoor ceremony was to start we were hit by a Nor'Easter. Cloud to ground lightening, thunder, driving wind and rain.

We should have been married in Historical Gardens that are several hundred years old, with out cocktail hour on a covered porch overlooking the ocean.

We ended up getting married in the conference room, had the cocktail hour in the hallway (which actually is like a room itself and gorgeous).

We had a wicked sunset though, so some of our pictures are gorgeous with a killer sunset. Lemons into lemonade, right?

  • Oh, and our rehearsal dinner:

We had a catered BBQ at my parents house. Filled the canoe with ice and beer, put up a tent and bunch of twinkle lights in the trees, Lit every candle we could find, toasted s'mores, had an ice cream truck come. We invited all of our guests, it was fantastic, low key, just a ton of fun.

Until the moment I realized I hadn't packed a bra, and was wearing a thin tank top. It was not anywhere near appropriate, and obviously noticeable. All night.

  • Our wedding day was perfect- no really it all went so well. The only "problem" was our DD ended up driving other people home (people that were not invited to the wedding and crashed it). So we had to wait an hour to get a ride to the hotel. I was so tired and hanging around watching them clean up was not how I envisioned the end of my night.

Yikes! I could never go without a bra.. I would have to go out and buy one. No one wants to see 40F's in only a tank top! LOL

  • Definite first world problem but my very expensive custom cake was completely wrong. They were overloaded and decided to cut out a lot of the details I had asked (and paid) for. The cake was still beautiful but it was a one time deal and I paid a shlt ton of money for it.

    image

Lots of stuff has happened between then and now.

  • The only thing that went "wrong" was that the ceremony director left all our stuff, book and extra programs, bubbles, etc. at the church.  She said she didn't know she was supposed to bring it, the one thing I didn't explain to someone.  It reallu stunk bc the girls who were in charge of our book did a sorry  job and all of 20 people signed it (there were 200 people there).  Other than that though it was perfect and no one but us even knows about that :)

  • I had the flu along with my mom, grandpa, DH's grandma and 2 aunts... there was one bathroom in the church... you do the math!
  • The day was great - kinda rainy, but no major complaints.

There are things I would have changed looking back but nothing stood out as being bad/wrong/a mess the day of.

Our DJ sent a different guy than who we met with and he was a tool. (Did not play the right songs we picked out for different parts) But it didn't ruin the reception or anything.  People were dancing and having fun.

I didn't like my hair - not the stylists fault. She did what I told her, but I just wish I has chosen something different.

And there was something off about the groomsmen tuxes. The ties were weird and I wish the place where we rented them had offered better suggestions. I didn't know what I was doing when I picked them out.

  • The only minor hiccup we had was that the DJ started playing the kareoke version of the father/daughter dance. No one really knew what was going on until he switched it over halfway through the song. At the time I was upset because I had been looking forward to dancing with my dad to that song for years, but looking back it was such a small thing.

On the other hand, the day before the wedding was a list of horrors which ended with us being locked out of the church for the rehearsal and me forgetting my underwear for the wedding day and having to drive an hour home and back at ten at night to get them.

  • Wedding day was great except fr the rain and 3 people who rsvpd no but came anyway.

I slept in my bathtub the night of my rehearsal dinner. There were 8 people sleeping in my one bedroom apt so that was the only empty space. Not nearly as uncomfortable as I thought. Until the next morning when my mil was peeing and heard me snore and almost had a heart attack.

  • DH's aunt crashed our rehearsal dinner (I'm beginning to see a theme), and that's really about it.

  • My dress wouldn't zip. When they altered the dress they bunched up some fabric right by the waist so it wouldn't go past that point. I tried, both of my maids of honor tried, even my aunt tried to zip it up. (We were trying to be super careful because my gown was my grandmother's that my gramp had restored for me) I have some pictures where half the side is unzipped so I had to stand funny. *L* Finally a local seamstress was called, she walked in told me to take a deep breath and she yanked the zipper up. I had to ride an hour to the church with my armpits to the air conditioner in the Jeep then wait another two hours until the ceremony! (My wedding was August 8,2009)I eventually changed my dress to something shorter halfway through the reception. The picture in my siggy is one of the "half zipped" pictures.

ETA: We also had someone switch a bunch of people's seats at the reception. We have an idea of who it was and are still p!ssed about it.

  • It rained slightly, but in AZ that may as well be a hurricane.  They wanted to pull the wedding inside but it cleared up about 15 minutes before the ceremony and they dried all the seats very quickly.

Only other minor thing wrong was that my friend who set out the table numbers put them out wrong.  DH's family was sitting way in the back and was upset about it.  I didn't even know anything was wrong until the next get together when they said something.

  • Our wedding wasn't traditional. We were married in a court house, in the Netherlands.

What went wrong? The lady who did our ceremony was supposed to do it in Dutch and English (so I could, you know, understand) and her english SUCKED! Like... really effing bad. She was so nervous, she kept giggling.. and had no idea what to say. She also forgot to tell us to exchange rings until after she was done.

I say it went "wrong", but it didn't bother us.. it put some humor into our day. It was kinda funny :)  It was funny because my husband had to help her translate.

  • Oh my gosh, what didn't?

Our photographer showed up late so we had to do pictures after the ceremony. This took way too long causing people to leave. I didn't get any pictures with my BM's :( My stepmom got jealous of my mom/stepdad and threw a hissy fit. During my father-daughter dance my dad told me I needed to apologize to her for not dedicating a song to her. wtf? DH and I got in a huge fight the night before. My dress got insanely muddy because I forgot to  bustle it. Food got cold, beer ran out. blah blah blah

  • The guy who was performing our ceremony accidentally introduced my brother as the "brother of the groom".  He suffered a traumatic brain injury many years ago and got confused so it was not a big deal, but the look on my BILs face when he thought he was being called to give a reading was priceless.

  • I sprained my ankle walking back down the aisle after the ceremony.

The conference room where I got ready w/ my bridesmaids and such was locked and we had to find someone to unlock it, which took almost an hour. Which meant were the last people to leave our reception, except my parents, who drove behind us.

The police were almost called because of a "suspicious man" wandering around the marina. It was actually one of my guests who took a long way to walk from the parking lot to the reception so he could enjoy the beautiful night.

  • My mom's group was talking today about our weddings and what went wrong.  Honestly...very little that anyone but me noticed.  I loved planning my wedding.  Loved it.   I suppose the biggest thing that went wrong was our coordinator got confused and thought we were not doing a blessing before dinner since our minister was unable to attend the reception.  My uncle was going to do it instead, so we played it off like it was supposed to be given after the salad course.  Other minor things....a centerpiece toppled before everyone arrived....only I knew this because I knew the number of high vs. low centerpieces.   DH kneeled when he shouldn't have during the ceremony, part of my bustle broke, but luckily it was a removable train.

Ooooh I forgot that my photographer left before the end of the wedding.  He didn't get us driving away or anything.  I was slightly disappointed in that.

  • We had a really, really fantastic day.  In the grand scheme, none of these things matter, but my minor quibbles:

    1. It was SO hot outside.  In fact, it broke and still holds the record for hottest June 7.

    2. Our cake was not right at all.  We got married at a fancy hotel and part of the deal was that they did our cake.  We weren't, however, allowed to meet with the person that would make the cake.  We just told the hotel person we were working with what we wanted and she conveyed the message.  We brought in all of these pictures, paint samples of the colors we wanted, and on and on, but it just didn't look right.

    3. I didn't like the way our pictures came out.  They weren't bad, but I just wish I had chosen a photographer with a different style.

  • I think my guests would say nothing -but in honesty so many things went wrong ;op

My hairdresser took aver 2 hours to do my hair because she forgot to leave some out in the front for a side sweep and had to start over two times - my fault for going last out of 7 girls, she was tired.  This eliminated all my 'getting ready' time, so I threw on make up, threw on my dress and ran outside for pictures (completely forgetting all my jewelry).  My photographer did a great job with a short period of time, but it was a rush and blur.

I wore my blusher through the ceremony, there was a spot light shining on me which mate the tulle opaque and I couldn't read my vows (luckily I had them mostly memorized and got through it without too much stumbling).

Our limo driver booked a second apt an hour away (starting at the time we had them booked until) and ditched us early, which cut into our B&G portraits - so we didn't get as many shots as I would have liked.

The waitress for our table poured red wine down the side of my gown.

I had cut quilt squares in our wedding colors for people to sign and then I could turn into a quilt later - the coordinator forgot to put them out.

We created a special chicken entree with the chef  -  chicken breast smothered in this amazing cream sauce... so good at the tasting.  Somehow the wires got crossed in the kitchen and just plain dry chicken breasts were served, no sauce... so bland (luckily there was tons of food and most people ordered the beef).

I think that is all - and I still had a BLAST!!!  I focused on my DH and just enjoying all the things that went right.  I LOVED wedding planning and I LOVED my wedding.  We still have guests comment that it is one of the best weddings they've ever been to.  The best thing is I can share these stories with all my brides and reassure them that even though something WILL go wrong on the wedding day, it can still be the most perfect day ever!

  • Ours wasn't too bad.

    - It was raining that day, and we almost didn't get photos taken.  Luckily, the photographer was great, and she was willing to come out last minute when the skies cleared.  We had planned an outdoor photo shoot.  H was roasting in his tux, but the pictures turned out great.

    - the 4 year old flower girl, my niece, didn't actually toss any petals.  I didn't care, and it made everyone laugh when my brother threw some out before I entered (his daughter was the flower girl.)  Otherwise, she did an awesome job.

    - the guy who married us did ok.  He was a little long winded, but ultimately he was fine.  It was a non religious ceremony, and he mentioned the word God out of habit.

I almost started crying when I was walking in, but H helped me to keep it together.  I just looked into his eyes.  He also kept me from fumbling the "hand off" - where my mom handed me over to him after walking me down the aisle.

  • We had non-traditional music for our ceremony, which was held in a loft. The music began skipping just before the bridesmaids walked down the aisle. We joked that it was my dad (who passed 3 years before) letting us know he was there.

Then, instead of cake, we had cheesecake and we were going to cut into one and it was frozen solid.

We told the DJ we like country music, so he decides to play Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (at a wedding?!?!?!) and my MIL, who had been cheated on by FIL (now divorced) decided to sing at the top of her lungs.

All these things were things that made our day special, not necessarily what went wrong.

After 3 failed IUIs, we welcomed our daughter through adoption. She is the love of my life.

  • I was late and the priest started without me!  Some minor hiccups but nothing that truly upset me.  After the reception we had a boat cruise around Manhatten.  The toilets on the boat flooded while I was in them! After that we went to a bar at maybe 3am which was all great fun but since it's so hard to pee while in your wedding dress I held it for too long.   When my husband took too long saying his goodbyes I decided to march up 32nd street in NYC all by myself.  Numerous shouts of congrats were ignored as I was in desperate need to pee.  Yeah I didn't know my room number nor did I have a key and for some strange reason reception refused to believe my room was the bridal suite.  I woke my parents so I could use their bathroom.

  • My hairdresser was running almost 45 minutes late, which then made me run 45 minutes late. I also threw the bouquet into the chandelier and a waiter had to get a ladder to retrieve it.

It was also like lava outside at 100+ degrees. Smart move on our part having a midday wedding in July in TX.

It was a torrential rain storm out and some of our guests lost power and had to get ready in the bathroom at the hotel, the Rabbi was late because of the rain, and the cake didn't look the way I wanted it to.

  • I am a lurker here but I just wanted to chime in on this thread. Our wedding went really well but there were definitely things that went wrong!

The main thing was that my dress was at my parents' house so I was under the impression that my mom was going to bring it to the church. Well, it was about 10 minutes before pictures when I realized that she thought I was going by her house to get my dress. Well her best friend goes to her house to get the dress but doesn't have a key to the house. She had to break into the house by climbing through a tiny bathroom window. Thankfully she was able to get the dress and get back to the church in time for pictures!

  • When my FIL gave a champagne toast at the reception he accidentally said his oldest son's name instead of DH's name.  Everyone laughed and neither DH, BIL, or I really cared because it was just funy, but my FIL felt really bad.  Other than that our wedding was pretty much perfect.  It was even 65 degrees and sunny...which for a November day in Minnesota was amazing.  We were able to take a lot of beautiful outdoor photos that we hadn't even planned on.
