wouldn't you want to know?

So my DH and I decided to keep LO's name a secret because we didn't want everyone's opinions ("I went to school with a ____ and she was a total slut"). HOWEVER, DH told me a story recently that now applies in my life, in a way. One of his coworkers was pregnant, having a girl, and was very excited to tell everyone the name. When he and the other men at work heard the name, they all recognized it immediately as the name of a porn star. None of them wanted to tell her because they didn't want to hurt her feelings or anything. I told him that THAT is a case where I'd want to know! Be it the name of a porn star, a serial killer, anything along those lines where people may make that association. Now a friend of mine is pregnant and when she told us her boy and girl names, again my DH recognized the girl name as a porn star name. (I'm really making DH sound like a pervert here, aren't I? lol) So my question is, would you want to know? I know she'll be mad at me for telling her, but I, personally, would want to know.

Re: wouldn't you want to know?

  • If it was a really famous porn star that a lot of people had the chance of recognizing the name of....yes, I'd want to know.

    Otherwise...why bother?

But, I will say that there can be disadvantages to NOT telling people your chosen name.  If my sister hadn't shared hers, she wouldn't have realized that the initials spelled "***" :P

  • If it were just a first name (eg Jenna), I wouldn't say anything. If your friend's last name is Jameson, then I'd say something.

  • <------ Mother of the year (check out DS' name).  I love the name though and I am very irish and liked it for that reason.  Have many people made the association with the porn star, no.  I hear more about the whiskey then Jenna Jameson.

  • My college boyfriend told me that my first name was the same as a relatively famous porn star (according to him). It didn't bother me at all. LoL. I figured, if I could make it 19 years without having heard the reference, I was fine.

Personally I'd be kind of discreet about it.  I'd suggest googling potential baby names to see who your baby could be sharing a name with and then let her make the decision herself.  Anything more than that will make you look like a creeper IMO and just piss off your friend.

I agree with suggesting casually, "I heard it's good to google names before you decide just in case your baby's name turned out to be the same as a serial killer." or something.

What is the name, by the way?

I agree with this. Unless it's either a girl's name that literally no other woman in the world but a porn star has or it's the same first and middle or first and last, I don't know that it's necessary to tell her. Keep in mind that by the time her baby is old enough that her classmates and friends know the names of porn stars, the porn star she shares a name with will probably (hopefully) no longer be making porn.

  • Try googling the first name and see what comes up!

    Absolutely this!

  • Is it just the first name or the first and middle?

I named my daughter Layla.  When were throwing around middle names my husband thought of Starr.  My coworker kindly informed me that it was the name of a porn star, haha.  So I nixed Starr (which I didn't really like anyways) and kept Layla.  I don't care that she has the same first name as some porn star most people have never heard of.

This 100%! Normally, when it comes to baby names, I'd keep my negative opinions to myself, but if the child's full name was the same name as a porn star, I'd tell them but w/regret in my voice. I'd want to know if the situation was reverse, especially if it was a baby girl!

I agree with this. Then she can choose to find out if she wants to. Because personally I don't really need to hear about my friend's husband's relationship with porn especially if it is anyway connected to my baby.

  • The name we chose for ds is a character in a 1970's cult classic film, but I had never seen it, nor even knew about it until someone told me!  My DH and I wanted a strong unique name that wasn't spelled weird, or questionable on a resume as to what gender he is.We found it on a list of the most popular names in Ireland.  My DH is Irish and we both loved it.

When I found out about the name I googled and asked my DH, which he replied, that yeah he knew it was the name of this character but it didn't matter to him.  At first I was concerned, but I love the name and wouldn't change it for anything.  I'm also glad someone told me.

My 7 year old SD has a friend in her class at school names Jenna James......Dh shakes his head everytime they call out the kids names at assemblies.

Haha this terrible name that my husband loved ended up being the name of a serial killer with our last name. It was the only way I could get him to stop suggesting it.

DD's name will be the same as a notable person, but it's someone who is really well regarded so it doesn't bother us.
