When I was little and when my nephews were little (they are early 20s now), they used to make coloring books that you would color by painting the page with water. The colors would appear when the paper got wet. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I know my DS would love these, and they made very little mess. I've looked for them everywhere. Has anyone seen them anywhere?
YES!! I loved using those. I have been thinking about them recently because I agree, they would be a perfect art thing for toddlers. And no mess! I hope someone has found them.
We've bought some like that for S, they sell them a lot of places. Can't remember who makes them, the ones we've bought comes with a small wand that you fill with water and has a small tip at the end. When they press on the pages, it turns to color. It stays until it dries, then it disappears and you can do it all over again. Check the book area at Wal-Mart or any place like that. Here's a link to one like we had, but we found it cheaper in store. Sorry, no clicky, on mac.
I've seen them at Walgreens (in CA)... both the one-time use ones and these water WOW ones. The WOW ones dry and and they can do them over and over and over again. I actually bought DS's at the airport on a trip (RDU actually!) but saw them at Walgreens a couple of months ago.
I was searching everywhere for these too. Don't ask me why most places stopped carrying them, they're the best! Finally found them last week at Toys R Us, made by Melissa and Doug. Good luck!
I always see them at CVS! I know my MIL bought the girls a bunch from Walmart. The girls absolutely love them!

I just got them at Target. They had Curious George, Disney ones, and a few others. They keep them where the books are along with some other sticker and coloring books.
Re: Do you remember those "paint with water" books for kids?
Yes! I forgot about those, but that's a great idea. You can find them on Amazon. Here is one:
