June 2012 Moms

That is not a christmas present

So yesterday I was running errands with my mom (we were at their house for thanksgiving), and I could tell that my husband was bored, so I asked if he would go to Gamestop and pick-up a gift I needed to get a friend.  He of course agreed, because he enjoys going to gamestop.

When I got back from running errands, he said don't look in the back of the car because I got your christmas present too.  My first response, "Is it sparkly?".... he said "No, it wasn't on your list".  I was impressed that he went off list because he usually struggles with gifts.

As we were driving home from my parents yesterday he said do you know what you are getting me for christmas?  and I tell him that I'm still thinking, so I am open to suggestions.  Then he asked if we were doing okay $$ wise for the holidays, and I assured him we were fine.

We get home, and he said, can I give you your christmas present now?  This isn't a shock to me, because whenever he buys a gift he wants to give it right away (he has done this ever since I've known him... he had my engagement ring for 4 hours).  So I said, okay.... because I knew it was killing him.

He said, it's kind of a gift for both of us, so you don't really have to buy me anything.  Dun... Dun.... Dun.... this is where you know the story turns bad.  He bought an xbox 360..... WHAT!?!?!  That wasn't even close to anything on my list, this is not a gift for me, this is a gift for him.  I'm not impressed.  He has spent the last 3 hours playing with friends online.... This is not a Christmas present (maybe for him, but NOT for me).  I'm so annoyed.

Re: That is not a christmas present

  • When I read the part about it being a gift for both of you I thought it would be a new TV.  I was not expecting an XBox.  Some guys really have no clue!  What did you say when he gave it to you? I probably would have laughed and then thrown it out the window haha.

  • While I understand your annoyance, do you have netflix or hulu? You can use those on xbox :)

  • I would make sure he knows that doesn't cut it for you, and that he needs to come up with a gift that's actually for you. But that's just my opinion

DH actually just redeemed the points from gas purchases for a gift card to Gamestop. I was very pissed that he got something for him with rewards that are suppose to be for us. So I'm making him use it for our son's Christmas present.

I was speechless all right.... I gave him the benefit of the doubt.  But today has proven that this is not a gift for me.

We don't have either of them.  We were trying to budget, and not spend money of them.

  • Oh, no way. If it were me, I would definitely make him pack it back up and return it. That's out of control.

  • Tell him he's getting a diamond necklace and earrings for Christmas.  Oh, and a spa package for ladies.

This! If you want to avoid the argument, I would just myself some new earrings and a day at the spa. Good luck!

  • I'd make him pack it back up and wrap it up nice for me until Christmas.  It's not his gift afterall.  That being said, I use ours with Netflix, and we got a Kinect, so that's fun, but I'd be angry if my husband had surprised me like that with something I didn't want at all.

  • I would be beyond pissed. I know how you feel though, my H does nothing but plays Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 online all day. I told him that it was inconsiderate to do that since that takes away the TV from everyone else and when he's not playing, he has the remote and won't let anyone else touch it. It's a catch-22, I tell him that I'll just watch TV in the room and I'm told I'm anti-social. I really get nothing out of watching him play video games.

  • Coming from someone whose hubby loves his xbox, there is NO.WAY it is a 'for both of us' gift. I would flat out say, "this is your gift this year, and don't expect anything else." And make it clear that it is in no way for you, too (unless, of course, you are a gaming type of girl).

  • I have a friend whose husband really wanted one. She said no, until she had the kitchen aid mixer she wanted, he was not getting an xbox. Guess what he came home with the next day. A stand mixer for her and the xbox for him.

  • LOL!!! if my husband did something like that i would totally throw it out or agree with that he gets nothing else.  some men dont get it at all.  he will surely be hurting when the baby comes and the precious xbox will be one giant dust collector!!
  • Ohh bad hubby!!

When DH told me he wanted some kind of video game system I told him he had to buy me the American Idol karaoke game. ( I sing really really bad). So he opted for no game system!!!

  • After he got off it this afternoon I told him that it did not feel like a gift for me, that it felt like a gift for him.  I appreciate that he thought it might be something we could do together, but this afternoon proved what it was going to be (not a gift for me).
  • WOW, that is not very nice!  I would simpy mention that you are carrying his child, so he better come up with a gift that YOU and you alone will enjoy.  I actually bought my DH a playstation last year for Christmas because he has been wanting one for forever.  To be honest, I was a little concerned that he'd play it ALL of the time.  He actually does not play the game while I'm in the same room with him, so its working out just fine!

We don't have either of them.  We were trying to budget, and not spend money of them.

    Netflix + Hulu = $16ish a month

    Cable = $50-$200 a month

We have saved a TON of money this year by cancelling our cable and using the XBox for television. It's not for everyone, but it works great for us.  :)

  • After I killed him I would tell him thanks for doing his own shopping for Christmas. And tell him it's not Christmas yet. Take the thing down wrap it up and put HIS name on it under the tree!!!!!!!

  • I would have told him that you didn't realize you were each buying yourselves a gift from each other.  Then, I would tell him that if that is in fact your gift that you would like to return it for something else.

  • Don't buy him anything! He already got his present.
