Pregnant after a Loss

XP - Hcg levels at 14 dpo?

I'm switching to a new dr's office for this PG because we have moved about 2 hours away from my old doctor. I just got off the phone with them. My hcg at 14 dpo was 34. Does that seem low? It seems low to me and I'm really concerned. The woman I talked to was very rude and not very helpful. I'm not even sure they know we had a CP in July. She just said it just means it's early. They aren't doing a second test and my first appointment with them is Dec. 6 (I've been working with my Family Doctor, whom I really like, through TTC and the CP).

I'm debating just calling the lab to do a second test independently in a couple days, even if we have to pay for it. I'm just sitting here trying not to cry right now I feel so discouraged.

Re: XP - Hcg levels at 14 dpo?

  • It really doesn't matter the # as much as it does that it doubles in 48-72 hours, I wouldnt read too much into it, lots of girls on this board have had low #s at 14dpo and some very high #s....

Also, I believe if you google, there is chart stating the "avg" for 14dpo is 49....

  • At 11 DPO my betas were 24, at 13 DPO they were 49.  I was freaked out too, but I think it is more about doubling time, so I have NO CLUE why they wouldn't do a second test.

You could have a late implanter.

  • My betas at 15DPO= 436 (which I think are high, I thought I was having multiples).  There are many factors that affect betas.  You could be a slow starter or maybe even a late implanter (the betas for someone who implanted at 5 dpo would be higher than someone who implanted at 7dpo).

What really matters isn't so much the 1st number, but that they rise and double accordinally.

If it makes you feel any better my 1st draw at 9 DPO was only 8!!

  • Yours doesn't seem low to me at all. The number itself doesn't matter. It's what it does that matters.  Congratulations!

  • They aren't planning to do anything else - not even another check - until Dec. 6. I would feel better with another check to see how the levels are progressing but they aren't doing it. I don't think I'd be out of line to call back and ask them to schedule a second check of my levels right?

  • I don't think it's out of line of you to ask, BUT it may not be covered under your insurance to run additional lab work if the doctor deems it unnecessary and then you are OOP for the lab bill, which can get expensive.   I notice a lot of OBs will just do 1 draw to confirm pregnancy, usually it seems the REs monitor the rising of betas....

def doesn't hurt to ask, but get all the facts before you are stuck with a bill....

The only reason my OB ran more betas was because I asked for them and also because I was spotting (with both pregnancies).  Since my initial number was so low this time around, they requested another beta but not until a week later.

  • It is not low.  You were probably just a late implanter.  As long as they are doubling you should be good.  FWIW, my HCG was 45 at 14DPO....

  • Okay - I called back and the doctor ordered another quantitative blood test tomorrow to check how the levels are progressing. I feel a lot better - that will at least give me an idea of how it is going.

If I did my first hcg check at 4 p.m. Monday and they want me to go to the lab tomorrow for the second, I should try to go  at 4 or later, right? So it's a full 48 hours?

I always tried to go around the same time.  It was easier for me (mentally) to know there was a full 48 hours in between.

  • It's not really the beginning # that matters, its whether or not it doubles.  I am a little confused as to why they would have even done one test if they weren't planning on doing a follow-up.  Unless they just wanted to confirm the pregnancy?  I would call them back and let them know how you feel and tell them you WANT another test, just for your own sanity if anything.  It's not like it would put them out at all!  GL!

Just saw your update above: Yay that they are doing another test!  I always waited to make sure I had at least 48 hours in between my draws.  Let us know how it goes!

This for sure.  My beta at 11 DPO was 11.  At 13 DPO it was 35 I think.  The number doesn't matter as much as the increase does.

I would call, explain your CP again and ask that they do a repeat and a progesterone check given your history.  If they refuse, I would consider looking for another Dr again.  Your concerns are totally valid and I personally would have reservations working with a Dr's office that doesn't take me seriously.

  • Your HCG depends on a lot of factors. When did you implant? Could you have O'd later than you think? there are other factors. I know people with good pregnancies that had low HCG in the beginning, not something to feel down about. I think a doctor switch is a good idea though.
