Blood clots on Placenta?

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I went in for my a/s last week at 19w1d (found out that we are Team Pink - YAY!) and the dr told me they saw something on my placenta. It looks like a dark shadow on the u/s and dr said it could be a blood clot, which could eventually constrain blood flow to the baby and slow down development. The baby is healthy and normal right now. He said they would do another u/s at 28 weeks and look at it again.

I am trying to be optimistic, but waiting 8 weeks for an update leaves me a lot of time to worry...  The dr. seemed very nonchalant about it. I asked what the worst case scenario could be and he said that if the blood flow is constricted, they would have to deliver me earlier - around 36 or 38 weeks.

Has this happened to anyone else or anyone you know? And if so, what were the results?

Thanks!!

I am not sure if this is the same thing, but I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma- a blood clot between the placenta and the uterus- during my 11th week of pregnancy. After a week of bed rest, it was eventually absorbed and baby is fine. If doctor is not concerned, I would not worry about it.

I have a blood clot right next to my plecenta but not on it. It does look like it is on the plecenta in U/S though. It caused me to have bleeds early on but I was never told it would cause my baby not to grow. They didn't even mention it at my last U/S...

Hopefully your baby will be just fine.

I had a blood clot on my placenta... The doctor said it should heal itself. That I might see some spotting from it. I never did and had a ultra sound 2 weeks ago at 20 weeks and it had healed itself. Hopefully you are just like me!!!! :)

I hate to scare you, and I'm sure this is a worst case scenario. My daughter's teacher found out she had a clot in her placenta when she was about 18 weeks. At 22-24 weeks her baby was only measuring at 9 oz. Her doctor told her they were surprised the baby was still alive. They told her when the baby weighed one pound they would take her. She ended up going to a specialist a week or two later. They told her if the baby lived until November 2nd they would take her no matter how much she weighed because there was nothing wrong with her. She just wasn't growing because of the clot. She just lost her baby last week, and I can't even begin to imagine that. I think she was at about 27 weeks. I hope this doesn't freak you out too badly. I just thought if it were me, I'd rather be prepared than not. I hope everything works out for you and your baby.

I had a blood clot that presented early in the pregnancy after I had some spotting.  I was put on modified bed rest for the rest of the first trimester and during my 14 week scan it was almost gone.

It can seem very scary, but this article actually eased my mind alot: https://www.justmommies.com/articles/subchorionic-hematoma.shtml.  Basically the risk of pregnancy loss due to these blood clots is very low (1-3%), it can lead to complications, but I would take the lead from your doctors.  If they are not worried, I would not worry too much (easier said than done I know).  I'm sure they will monitor you, in fact might mean you get more pics of your lovely little girl.  If you start spotting, don't hesitate to call your doctors, but the rule of thumb mine gave me was if it was dark red or brown and spotting only that was actually a good thing, as it likely means your body is expelling the clot.  My DH liked to remind me that our LO is a fighter and was pushing out the anomaly because it was in their house.

Obviously there are rare cases, like the one heathergirl mentioned, but the emphasis there is that it is rare and if it has not restricted growth at this point the likelihood is that it won't.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. We are praying and remaining optimistic about this. The good news is, our LO was already up to 1 lb. at 19 weeks and was continuing to develop as normal. Just to appease my worries, I am going to request another ultrasound at my next visit around 24 weeks.
