I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I went in for my a/s last week at 19w1d (found out that we are Team Pink - YAY!) and the dr told me they saw something on my placenta. It looks like a dark shadow on the u/s and dr said it could be a blood clot, which could eventually constrain blood flow to the baby and slow down development. The baby is healthy and normal right now. He said they would do another u/s at 28 weeks and look at it again.
I am trying to be optimistic, but waiting 8 weeks for an update leaves me a lot of time to worry... The dr. seemed very nonchalant about it. I asked what the worst case scenario could be and he said that if the blood flow is constricted, they would have to deliver me earlier - around 36 or 38 weeks.
Has this happened to anyone else or anyone you know? And if so, what were the results?
Thanks!!
Re: Blood clots on Placenta?
I have a blood clot right next to my plecenta but not on it. It does look like it is on the plecenta in U/S though. It caused me to have bleeds early on but I was never told it would cause my baby not to grow. They didn't even mention it at my last U/S...
Hopefully your baby will be just fine.
Make a pregnancy ticker
I had a blood clot that presented early in the pregnancy after I had some spotting. I was put on modified bed rest for the rest of the first trimester and during my 14 week scan it was almost gone.
It can seem very scary, but this article actually eased my mind alot: https://www.justmommies.com/articles/subchorionic-hematoma.shtml. Basically the risk of pregnancy loss due to these blood clots is very low (1-3%), it can lead to complications, but I would take the lead from your doctors. If they are not worried, I would not worry too much (easier said than done I know). I'm sure they will monitor you, in fact might mean you get more pics of your lovely little girl. If you start spotting, don't hesitate to call your doctors, but the rule of thumb mine gave me was if it was dark red or brown and spotting only that was actually a good thing, as it likely means your body is expelling the clot. My DH liked to remind me that our LO is a fighter and was pushing out the anomaly because it was in their house.
Obviously there are rare cases, like the one heathergirl mentioned, but the emphasis there is that it is rare and if it has not restricted growth at this point the likelihood is that it won't.
Good luck and keep us informed.
