Ugh...I feel horrible. My original intention was to make Koltyn's food once he started getting solids. I purchased a Baby Brezza and went to town. Once he started eating at the babysitters taking Gerber foods was easier rather than worrying about making sure to get my containers each day, etc. So, unfortunately we have completely slacked on making food and stuck to gerber. Last week we tried a stage 3 chix and noodles. Koltyn developed a few slight bumps above his cheeks but went away within an hour. Last night we tried stage 2 Vanilla Custard with Bananas. Aftering eating he was super super fussy and irritable which is totally unlike my happy baby. About 3 hours after supper we were getting ready to give him a bath and when we took his clothes off noticed his entire body looked like he had 3rd degree burns. Both ears were swollen and huge. We immediately dressed him and went to the ER. They gave him benedryl and a steroid cream and we had to stay to be monitored. We had about a total of 6 nurses and doctors in the room at one time trying to figure out what in the world caused this. He is allergic to peanuts but no peanuts are present, obviously. The culprit....egg whites found in both of those gerber foods! The doctor said the initial reaction from eating the chix and noodles was mild, but the more they are introduced to an allergen the worse it gets...hence our experience last night. Flame me because I totally didn't pay attention to the ingredients, but aftering reading about how harmful egg whites are to an infant under 12 moonths why in the hell is gerber allowed to put these allergens in their products? I know every baby is different but for something on the "no no" list....and one of the top leading baby food brands is still allowed to use in their foods is beyond me. I'm irritated to say the least. Watching your son's entire body be covered in hives, watching his body swell, and watching doctors running around to make sure his throat wasn't swollen shut was enough for me. Sorry Gerber, but I'm done with you!
