Re: Miami Valley Family beginning

  • I was slated to use Family Beginnings for a water birth.  The facility is GORGEOUS.  Huge tubs if you plan to use them (my OB will deliver in them), and the rooms are fantastic.  I love that they have their own nursing staff as well, you don't get the OB nurses from the regular delivery floor.

One thing to remember with them is it is first come first serve.  They have I think 3 rooms, and if they are full, they will shuffle whoever delivers first to the regular recovery room and put the next mom in that is laboring.  It is a facility for delivery, not recovery though if they dont' need your room you get to stay there and recover as well.

If they are full when you are in labor, you go to the regular unit until a room opens up for you.  I ended up with the happening but it worked out.  The nurses on the regular unit are FANTASTIC.  I got to labor in the tub (though it is smaller and not whirlpool), nobody pushed drugs at me at all, used the birthing ball, couldn't have more great things to say about MVH regular delivery unit.  I had a c-section in the end (not due to anything that could have been prevented by nursing/delivery methods) but had a wonderful birth experience and managed to labor drug-free for 24 hours.  Their recovery rooms are really nice, though smaller than Family Beginnings and MVH has wonderful food, which was good since I was there 5 days after I delivered.

I think if you are planning a natural birth definitely try for Family Beginnings.  If you want drugs later or run into problems they will transfer you right around the corner, and worst case they are full and you end up in the regular unit.

  • ditto everything superchicy said. I was also supposed to deliver there, but they were full so I did not get to. I think the facility is awesome and only wish there were more rooms. If you're at all interested in a med free experience definitly go for it. The regular floor is great as well so regardless you are in good hands. I agree the food was really good too. Smile

  • Sorry for hijacking the post, but for those of you who delivered at Family Beginnings, who is your OB/GYN or midwife? Are you happy with them? I'm possibly in the market for a new OB.

  • Same as what was said above....love them!  I am pregnant again and going back to Family Beginnings.  I wouldn't think of going anywhere else.  My doctor is Dr Horlacher (and also saw Dr Woods).  But Dr Guy delivered Cedric and he is wonderful too.  I can't say enough good about these doctors:)

The rooms are great.  My DH loved the big beds so that we both had room to sleep together in the room. It is set up just like a bedroom in any home.  The bathrooms are huge with the hot tub inside them.  The doctors listed above will deliver in them if you want to.  The best decision that I've made for me.  Good luck!

I use the same practice as ryry, LOVE them.  They will also deliver in the tub if you are looking for a water birth like pp said.  Dr. Guy did my c-section though both were there through my labor, can't say enough good things about them.   I switched mid pregnancy because I wasn't happy with my previous OB and it was the best decision I made.

  • I go to Huey and Weprin but after lots of recommendations for Dr. Horlacher I am thinking of trying to switch there for next pregnancy. I love Dr. Huey but I don't think he is going to be very supportive of a VBAC.

  • I see the Premier Heath Specialists and Midwives of Dayton. they are great, there are 3 or 4 midwives(havent met them all yet), and 2 doctors(only met 1 of the doctors). One of the midwives you meet will always be on call so you will always know whom will be caring for you and your baby. They have you alternate days for your apts so you meet everyone, including the doctors. They are just great! my only complain is the wait time in the office. ive been 4 times and cant seem to get out of there in less than 1 1/2 hrs. But the care is more important i believe. this is my first baby so i guess I wont know exactly how they are till the final day! hope this helps.

  • The docs that are most supportive of Family Beginnings Birthing Center (FBBC) are Dr's Wood and Horlacher (they are in practice together) and Dr. Guy and his midwives (Dr. Guy and Dr.'s Wood and Horlacher take call together)... also, Dr. Guy is like the founder of family beginnings. And the regular L&D nurses from the 'regular' L&D unit do in fact help staff family beginnings in times of shortages and when Family Beginnings has all three rooms full (Family Beginnings typically only has only one nurse on staff at a given time, but if there is more than one in labor, they will pull from the L&D unit or possibly call another FBBC nurse in if possible)... but the nurses on the L&D unit encourage the same thing as in FBBC - whatever they can do to make your labor what you want. Hope this helps!

  • Is the Family Beginnings Center only at MVH downtown or is there one at MVH south as well ? I live a lot closer to the south campus. Do the doctors actually deliver or do the midwives do it ? I don't suppose anyone actually do home deliveries ? Thanks.
  • Does anyone know the cost of delivery at Family Beginnings vs. Mother/Baby room?  I am having to pay for everything out of pocket and was considering Family Beginnings anyways because I would like to do a drug-free delivery.  Any help is appreciated :)
  • Just call the billing dept and ask them to pre-bill you as a cash patient. I am delivering there and had them pre-bill me so I could see how much I would expect.
