I've Had a Really Crappy Recovery

Hi Ladies...I haven't bumped in along time.  It's been a mixed bag of emotions since the boys were born.  They are fantastic babies and I love being a mother but the pregnancy and c-section have completely destroyed my body.  My boys are 19 weeks old and my incision is still open.  I have been seeing a wound care specialist for months.  The extra skin I have seems to be making it very difficult to heal. In addition I stilll am having issues with my blood pressure.  Prior to pregnancy I was an avid runner and in perfect health with the resting pulse and blood pressure of a pro-athlete.My internist says that I would qualify for a medically necessary tummy tuck because I have gotten rashes in the new skinfold, but I am terrified of being opened again.  Has anyone else had a hard time physically?

  • Oh my goodness, you poor thing. I cannot imagine how stressful that must be. I hope that you can get over this fear and go ahead with the tummy tuck. T&P coming your way Momma.

So afraid that being opened again will result in another non-healing wound.  This is  my second round of wound care.  I was released in early April and it reopened 3 weeks later.  It's been so hard to take care of the boys because I am not supposed to lift their car seats.  I can't even return to work next week like I had initially planned.  It's been a nightmare.

  • What did your doctor say about your concern over the tummy tuck being yet another non-healing wound? I think you have a legitimate concern over not wanting to get that procedure done. On the other hand, I personally wouldn't pass up a tummy tuck that is covered by insurance!

I had a CBC drawn to see if I have any deficiencies that could be causing this.  He said I couldn't have the surgery anyway until I have done more recovering as the section was only 4  mos ago.  I figured it was too early to get into the details.  He just mentioned that he was putting in my chart that I have had skin irritations already (2 to be exact) and when the time comes that I want to do it it will be covered.

  • oh mama, im so sorry!!! i cant imagine what you're going through you poor thing!! tons of prayers coming your way hun!! as for the tummy tuck, i would be scared out of my mind as well. once you get over this hump and the wound heals up a little maybe they will find out whats wrong and why you're not healing like your sopposed to. i know diabetics have a hard time healing. could you have gotten diabetes after your pregnancy? my SIL passed her diabetes test while she was pregnant but after she delivered my niece, she got full blown type 1 diabetes. maybe have the doc check that out if they havent already? on another note about the tummy tuck, you could get an infection as well from the skin irritation from the extra folds. and that could pose an even bigger problem and also cause you to not heal like you're sopposed to. I hope you get better soon!! Prayers are comin your way for sure!

The doctors don't seem to think I am. I don't have any other symptoms.  Pretty sure they will check that out in my bloodwork though.

  • I'm so sorry to hear you're having a tough recovery.  I also had a tough time in the past year, but with different issues.  I had a post partum hemmorhage which required a few blood transfusions and left me really weak for awhile after my delivery.  Also, something happened to one of my nerves during the c-section and I had tingling in my left thigh, along with a lot of pain if I put pressure on it.  It made it difficult to even take walks at the beginning.  It took 6 months before it went away.  Then at 8 months pp (unrelated to the pregnancy), I started having horrible back pain - to the point where I was only sleeping 2 or 3 hours a night because I couldn't even lay down.  It took two months before doctors could find a diagnosis - I had a spinal tumor (luckily benign).  I had emergency surgery to remove it (which required 5 days in the hospital laying flat), then had to have my mom live with us for awhile because I couldn't even hold, let alone lift the girls.  So here I am over a year later and finally feeling back to myself again (ran for the first time in forever last night).  I know these issues are not at all what you have, but just wanted to let you know I can relate to a difficult recovery.

I hope your incision heals very soon and although it's scary to be opened up again, a tummy tuck may be something to consider if you want to get back to your old self.  I wouldn't mind it if I could get one covered by insurance!  :)

Just wanted to add, your boys are adorable!

  • I just wanted to say that I am really sorry!  I can't imagine the recovery being worse than the pregnancy.  I hope you heal soon.

  • i almost had to go to the wound center. My incision was not healing properly - but was not infected- it just kept oozing and never fully closed- even after 8 weeks+... but then i started to blow it dry with the hairdryer after showers- and it started to heal up. Apparently it was too wet - between not drying it enough, and it being summer and the nasty flap of fat hanging over it = sweat in there, etc.  So gross....

i'm guessing your issue is more than that - but it can't hurt to blowdry the area (on low of course).... if you aren't already.

so sorry. I had a HORRIBLE vaginal recovery - 8+weeks of horrible pain... so i know the feeling.  My c/s was cake - even though it didn't heal fast- i wasn't in pain... nothing compared to the vaginal birth. It sucks you are going through this. :(

  • Hi!  I was actually just thinking about you this morning... wondering how things are going with you.

I also had a horrendous recovery.  My wound is still raw and hard for me to look at and touch but I suspect it's not as bad as yours.  I try and blow dry it all the time and it seem to help.

Oh yeah, and everytime it rains, my scar hurts.  It F-cking SUCKS big time.  We are actually talking about TTCing again and more than anything else, I'm horrified by the prospect of having to give birth again.

    So in short HUGS :)

  • Thanks Ladies...It's pretty bad and it's been kept very dry because I am not allowed to get it wet unless it is right before a packing/bandage change.  I actually had to go for 2 whole months with shallow sponge baths only.  I felt disgusting!  Amazingly it has never been infected but open and draining.  My OB had said to use a hair dryer but the wound doctor said not to, apparently it is too deep for that.

Srh...so sorry you went through so much.  My friends all said that having a baby changes your body, but IMO having twins destroys it.  I am glad you are running and feeling better.  You give me hope.
