We used a regular bumper until she was about 7.5 months old. We swaddled her until that point and until then she wouldn't move or roll over or anything in her crib. Once she started moving and rolling over though, she would get herself over to the side and smoosh her face against the bumper. That freaked me out so I went and got the breathable bumper the next day. I do wish it was softer, but I guess then it wouldn't be breathable.
We didn't use a bumper until probably 6 months. Then we put it in because he got so distracted by EVERYTHING that he would look around when we put him down. The bumper helped keep him calm in his crib and go to sleep.
Now when I put him down in the crib I lay on the floor next to the crib until he's quiet for 10 seconds straight. Then I'll lift the crib bumper ever so slightly so I can see his face to make sure he's asleep before I crawl out of the room.
Yep, we've had a breathable from day one-but I'm getting a regular one this weekend. DS keeps hitting his head on the crib bars, as the OP stated the breathable bumpers aren't cushioned.

Yes. LO slept in her RnP until about 3 months, but they've been on the crib since she transitioned. Her crib is in our room, so I left off the front bumper so that I could see her from the bed. I just put it on this past weekend because she kept getting her limbs stuck in the bars and hurting herself. Honestly, even if LO sleeps in the crib right from the start, they can't move much, especially swaddled, so I personally wasn't worried about her suffocating against the bumper.

Its a SIDS concern- that they would smother themselves against the bumper and not be able to breathe.
I meant for me personally. It was never an issued for us until recently. C never rolled over now he is all over the place.

Yes, a regular one. About to take it off tonight now that LO can pull himself to standing in the crib (we've already lowered the mattress).
