This makes me fear having my daughter

link

I know this is going on. I see little tiny padded bras in stores like Wal-Mart and Target and I cringe every time I see them as I'm walking by. My SIL gave me an outfit that she put her daughter in at 2 or 3. It went straight back into the box. It was a little jean jumpsuit thing. It was trashy. Short shorts and no sleeves. Glitter. Awful. I'm going to make my daughter wear a potato sack her whole life.

  • that article makes me sick to my stomach.... and we are having a girl too.  It really is frightening the way kids are dressing (and their parents are letting them dress) these days...then I cannot help but wonder... how much worse will it be by the time our daugher is around that age?

me too!  A couple years ago, DH's brother was financially tight and we were doing well so did Christmas for DH's niece. I went to walmart to buy some essentials to send, only to find THONGS for little girls. Seriously? What 5 yr old needs a thong? I was appalled! I am so very glad we are having a boy.

  • Parents who dress their kids like this make me cringe! It's like they are grooming their kids to have wrong values in life.
  • One of the girls that I work with has a 14 year old daughter and she is OUT OF CONTROL.  She snuck a boy into their home and had sex, then if she goes to a friends house she post pics of herself on FB in the worst hoochie clothes.  (her mom threw away all her shorts that didn't go to her knees).  My mom would kill me if I acted like that.  Also some of the things that she says to her mom is just nuts, I just pray my LO doesn't go boy crazy.

  • Wow.  If DH saw that article our girls would not be allowed to leave the house..ever.  I don't get some of the clothes I see out now..half the time its not even something I would wear as an adult!  I developed super early and I remember that bringing a lot of attention that I was too young to fully understand at the time and I fear that for DD.  I just remind myself that I will do my best to raise my girls to have a good head on their shoulders and the won't WANT to wear things like that and will surround themselves with good people and situations.  That is my hope anyway..not that there will never be any rebellion but I was really close with my mom and I think that helped me make better decisions..like not dressing that way lol.

  • I just try to remind myself that it's truly up to me what actually comes into my house, and what goes out of my house.  No daughter of mine is dressing like a tramp any more than any son of mine is going to run around with his rear hanging out of his pants.  They can hate me and think that I'm not 'cool', but I honestly don't care, LOL.  But my real hope is that I raise them to respect themselves, their bodies, and to recognize that your appearance does reflect a lot about your character.

  • That's where we, as mothers, have to teach them to respect themselves and not by them anything that's inappropriate.

As for those that are having boys.  They need to teach their sons to respect woman and not go for trampy girls.  Is it even possible to teach a boy to "not go for trampy girls."  Hmm.

  • Yeah...we've seen some pretty horrendous things in the store. I'm glad DS is a boy. I am not too worried until DD gets to be a teen; before that we'll have a lot more say in what she can and cannot wear.

I COMPLETELY agree!! We are having a girl and I see little girls wearing tops that show their belly button and short cut off shorts, I just know that when my little girls is that old she will be wearing REGULAR clothes and I dont care if she thinks that makes me a horrible mom.

  • Horrible. Absolutely horrible.

I'm with you, Meimsx. As much as I love that we are having a daughter, it also scares me to death.

  • I'm terrified of having a daughter, for all these reasons. DH is terrified of having a daughter, for all these reasons.

I tend to be conservative. I think bikinis are cute on certain age children (like 2-3), then after that, I think a 1 piece until high school. I'm kind of nervous about the clothes DD will get as she gets older from friends and family. They will probably all think I'm nuts when she's not allowed to wear spaghetti strap low cut short dresses etc. (My 7 year old niece had one on, I kept pulling it back straight so her nipples didn't show. I was so frustrated with that dress.)

  • Oh my! I have had this problem with my 9 year old DD when she comes home from her dads. This is how his step-children are allowed to act and dress. This is just not acceptable in my house and I will not tolerate it! She came home with a half cut off shirt and tight, tight shorts! I don't freaken think so!!! So, needless to say, the clothes ended up in the trash. Cause to me, they looked like trash, therefore, thats where they belong!

I totally am doing this.  I watched some Dr. Phil a couple years ago about teenaged sex trends and was horrified at what girls are doing these days for boys.  I told my husband then that when we had kids it would be burned into their heads that you respect the opposit sex.  If you give it you had better receive it and vise versa- though my son is not doing any of this until he's at least 35 Wink

  • DH and I were just talking about things like this the other night. An old friend of mine posted a summer pic from last year of her little sister. He little sister is only a year older than mine, and she won't be 12 until July. This little girl already had breasts bigger than mine (that's not saying much, but still!), and she was wearing one of my old friends swim suits. My freind...now...she is a VERY open girl. She LOVES to show off her body and all her clothes show off WAY too much. Needless to say, the swim suit was a very tiny two piece, and she was letting it ALL hang out.

I was horrified! How could ANYONE let hteir child wear that? How could anyone put their baby siter in THAT? I would have killed my sister! And then any guy that might have dared look at her...or reverse that, not sure! We decided right then there would be no such thing as a two piece swim suit on our little girl until she was at least 14+. I couldn't imagine putting her in short shorts or anything fo that sort either. I wouldn't have walked out dressed like a hoochie, and I know for a fact I won't be letting my daughter either...good thing she is going to havve her big brother there to make sure she stays safe too...

I remember the things that were said to me, the things that HAPPENED to me when I was young, and I didn't even dress provacatively...I don't want to think about what could happen to my little girl if we allowed her to dress like some of the parents of today do...

  • don't know if this one's a girl, but she'll have two big brothers looking out for her if she is. afraid of the girl stuff I'll get if we do have a her!
  • I have to agree with you.  The MIL got us this "cute" jean skirt..for a newborn..ugh.  I hate when they don't give receipts too..our daughter will NOT be wearing that.  So glad to see someone who doesn't want their daughter to look like a stage child or little grown-up.  What a relief.

Here's to keeping our daughters looking like what they are.. little girls.

  • We're having a girl and both my husband and I are terrified! According to my husband our daughter won't be allowed to wear shorts, dresses, or skirts that are shorter than basketball shorts.
