xp: Question about Glasses

I know I'm still very new on here but I have a question for all you ladies. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

Rileigh went and saw a eye specialist today. We originally went in because she had a slight lazy eye, well it turns out that its a little more than that. Rileigh has whats called Duane Syndrome. Basically her left eye won't follow anything that goes to the left. The doctor said that the muscle in her eye that normally moves your eye to the left isn't working like it should. He said that at 1 year old she will probably have to have surgery to fix it. The second problem that he saw is called Anisometropia. Both of her eyes are farsighted, but the left eye is more farsighted then the right. He said that if we hadn't caught it like we did now that eventually her left eye would be blind because her brain wouldn't tell itself to use that eye (basically it would shut that eye down). He told us that normally he never uses glasses in children this young but in this case he is. He says that by getting her to wear glasses we can start getting the left eye to work. He also said that it will help with her Duane Syndrome, it won't cure it but it will help. He told us to start  trying to get her to wear her glasses for 2 hours a day. We know that we won't get much more out of her. He wants us to come back in 6 weeks to do a recheck.

My question is do any of your children have glasses or have you known anyone with children that have glasses and what are their tricks to keeping them on? I know I can get a band that will go around the back of her head but I was wondering if there is anything else that would work. Thanks in advance for any advice you ladies might have.

Re: xp: Question about Glasses

  • I don't have any advice, but I think MJLab's son has Duane Syndrome, too, if I'm not mistaken. He was recently diagnosed, and I don't know if he has glasses yet, but you might try asking her about it. She's on the 3-6 month board.

Good luck to you and Rileigh!

  • My DD started wearing her glasses at about 8 months (she's 9 1/2 months now). She has a genetic eye disease that's already caused her to lose most vision in her left eye--her right eye is ok, and the glasses are used primarily to keep her right eye safe.  She wears them all the time, and is doing really well.  It took about 2 weeks of her taking them off almost constantly, but then she started leaving them alone.

Fortunately, our city has an eyeglass store that specializes in children.  They make rubberized infant glasses that many babies use, but DD has wire frames that were recommended by the store.  The lady helping us said that since DD is going to probably have to wear them forever, it's better to get her used to regular frames early on (hers are actually by Fisher Price).  They don't have a strap around her head like the rubberized glasses, instead the arms of the glasses wrap around her ears.  We like them and she looks super cute (see below). Feel free to PM me with any questions.  Good luck!
