Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Do FF babies root?

I'm just curious - do FF babies root when they are hungry? If they do at first and then stop at some point, when do they stop?

Re: Do FF babies root?

  • Yes. Rooting is a reflex.
  • Well yes, of course. When they're hungry, they will try to turn their mouth towards finding the nipple, it doesn't make a difference that FF babies are given a bottle instead of breast in that sense.

I don't know when the reflex ends. DS is 8 weeks and still does it.

  • Yes, and I know my baby is more likely to root on me if he finds bare skin.

  • Yes.  Rooting is a reflex and this typically disappears within the first 3 month of life.

  • Stupid me - it's a reflex of course they do it. But does anyone know if FF babies stop rooting earlier than BFd babies? Has it stopped for anyone before 3 months?

  • M is 2 months, 2 weeks (almost) and he still roots.  I don't know if that has to do with being premature or not, but I do know that he has not "learned" to stop, if that's what you're wondering.
