Light Stool, totally freaked out

Sorry if this is TMI, I just went #2 and my stool was a light color... perhaps like a clay color.

I am calling my Dr. as soon as he opens but I am freaking out. I have never been pregnant before and I am in week 4.

?Anyone have any experience with this?

?

Re: Light Stool, totally freaked out

  • Take a deep breath.  I know pregnancy can be scary, and we are super aware of anything "weird" our bodies do during this time.  (Trust me, I know.  I went to the ER unnecessarily a few times with my last pregnancy.)  Just call your doctor and talk to them some time today.  As long as you aren't having pain/cramping/major bleeding, I don't really think it is anything you need to freak out about.

  • I'm sorry, but i don't understand why this is a reason to freak out.  Is your poop always the exact same color??

Yours isn't? I can't believe you're still able to sit up and type if you have different color poop sometimes *shudder*. Next thing you're gonna try and tell this girl is sometimes pee is a different color too...

  • OK so you guys have had a light whightish/clayish colored stool as well?

Yes when I have been sick. What did you eat yesterday?

  • I've never had that color, but it could have been something you ate as well. I don't think it necessarily means something negative for your pregnancy. I know this is all new (for me as well) but try not to flip out!

Agreed.  I'd poop a couple of more times and look for a pattern before telling the doctor.  I'd bet a whole quarter that they're going to say "nothing to worry about, but let me know if it happens again".

  • relax. poop comes in all colors and textures. mine smelled like garlic yesterday. i'm not kidding. every time i eat this one brand of garlic toast, it has a garlic scent the next day. it's very strange. these things happen. if it is swirled with blood, you might need to be concerned. even then, sometimes it's still nothing.

  • If it'll make you feel better, call the doctor but chances are its something different you ate or drank.  Google might even be your friend on this one if you need more answers.

  • it might just be something you ate babe. try to relax and think about all you've eaten in the last 2 days. i doubt it pgcy related.
  • this happened to me - about the middle of first tri - i spent a day looking up poop on google - colors and all.  It was fine - sometimes your poop is just a different color in pregnancy

  • Watch for a pattern over the next couple of days with your stool.  If it continues, I would call your primary care provider, NOT your OB.

And remember- you are 4 weeks along.  It is going to be a loonnnnggg pregnancy for you & everyone else around you if freak out at every little thing that is 'different' about your body during this time.  Any non-emergent issue can be discussed at your scheduled office visits.  One occurrence of different colored poop is generally not an emergent issue, nor is it generally an issue for your OB.
  • Good heavens, it's probably something you ate - if something was wrong with your pregnancy, it wouldn't be your poo that would give you the first indication.

    Relax.

  • Well I googled a bunch of stuff and it said you could have a liver problem. My husband things it just that I have eaten more fat than usual. I ate out for lunch and dinner yesterday (had a burger @ dinner and never order something like that)

I will just not stress about it over the weekend, have a dr. appt monday anyway so will see what he says.

Oh I forgot to metion I am a bit of a hypocondriac.

  • Do people really spend this much time analyzing the color of their poop?

  • I highly recommend you read books about what to expect during pregnancy.  They will help to ease your mind on a lot of things.

  • I've gotta say I really don't quite understand the snarkiness of this board sometimes. It's weird. There are a bunch of girls who are pregnant for the first time (including myself) and will obviously be 'freaking out' over nothing on occasion. So if you think it's a dumb question, don't answer it. No big deal.

To the OP- can't say I have ever had that issue, but I agree that it's probably not a big deal unless it keeps happening, then I would call the dr. Good luck! Also you should check out the October 2011 moms board if you haven't yet.

Not to be mean, but I don't think this comes as a shock to anyone.

My poop has been all shapes sizes and colors since I found out I'm pregnant.  As someone else said, unless there is blood in your stool, you're fine.

Freaking out over poop is a new one for me.

I never freaked out about poop shades when I was pregnant.

  • Have you been eating less meat lately?  When I became a vegetarian my poop got super light and I freaked out, but I looked it up and its normal to have lighter poop if you reduce your meat intake because there's no excess animal proteins left over to give you that brown poop.

^ This is what my mind keeps going to. Not sure why.

Floral bouquet, with a hint of fresh bell pepper and crisp honeydewwwwww

  • Wow, there is definitely no reason to freak out, as long as you are not bleeding out your bum you are fine. Mine turned so bright green after eating too many sugar cookies over the holiday season that I had my husband come look at it and I really wanted to take a picture but I refrained, lol. It was pretty unbelievable though. I assume you are taking prenatals and that will definitely affect how everything comes out. At least you had anything come out at all.

  • This also happened to me for a couple of weeks when I was pregnant with my daughter, and it was a result of my body getting used to the prenatal vitamins. After about two weeks, everything went back to what was "normal" for me! I wouldn't worry too much about it, but just double check with your doc if it really has you concerned.

As long as your poop doesn't turn purple, you're fine.
  • I hate when zombie threads come back to life. It always makes me wonder what the outcome was. Did she have a liver problem?!! Did she eat too much dairy?!?!? Did she ever realize that she should just be happy to take a pregnancy shit?!?!
It looks like clay colored poop prolongs the gestation period.  Poor OPis 172 weeks pregnant :(

  • Poop color is a big deal and is something people need to look at. I have IBD and my gastro says people could prevent or catch a lot of things by analyzing that!
  • Zombie poop threads. Good times on 1st tri.
  • This zombie thread was the most worthwhile zombie thread of them all!
