Tear Duct Issues?

Just wondering if anyone else out there has a LO with clogged tear ducts? DD's right tear duct has been clogged since birth and it causes MAJOR gunk to back up in and around her eye. We are going to the pediatric opthamologist (per our pedi's recommendation) today for the first time and I have no idea what to expect.

Re: Tear Duct Issues?

  • DS has the same issue...our Ped said that she wont refer us until he is around a year if it hasn't gotten better because the specialist won't do anything until then such as probe the duct to clear it.  We massage it and wash it daily.  It doesn't seem to bother him at all so I am not too concerned yet.  I will be curious to hear how your appointment goes and what they say!

I was a little surprised they referred us so soon. I was under the impression that they can take up to a year to fully form (which makes sense as to why your pedi said to wait until a year). We do the massaging and washing as well..no change yet. Sometimes I feel like it may be bothering her some, but it is so hard to tell. We'll see how today goes!

  • Are you BFing?  James has had 2 clogged tear ducts and both times, a couple days of me dropping some breastmilk in the corner of his eye cleared it right up.  GL!

  • I have heard this from several people. I would try the breast milk. My DD (now 4 months) had the same issue. It cleared up on its own a couple weeks ago. I was told there is nothing they can do until he is atleast 6 months.
  • We had this issue with our first son. One of our ped docs was very conservative and told us just to keep massaging it and keeping it clean.  It was constantly infected (ever tried putting drops into a 4 month old's eyes?)  We insisted that he have the surgical procedure where they just thread a tube down the duct at 8 mos. It was gone in a week.
