So I just wanted to share that after much debate, my husband and I decided to use Ferber method for our son last night. I agonized over it for months. Our son slept through the night from 4 weeks until about 3 months...and then stopped. He's been waking up anywhere from 4 to 10 times a night.
We researched all sorts of sleeping ideas...The No Cry Solution, Healthy Sleep Happy Baby, etc. We did use parts of No Cry to get our son to fall asleep in the crib, but we needed to pat his stomach, reinsert pacifier...and every 45 minutes-2 hours, he would wake screaming because he needed us to fall back asleep again. My husband and I would often fall asleep on the floor in front of his crib. Seeing as we haven't slept more than 3 hours in a row since October...I gave in. My pediatrician recommended letting him cry at night, but we decided to wait until after all the traveling was done for the holidays.
Ferber worked like a charm! We took away his swaddle and pacifer so he could suck on his fingers if he wanted. We put Joshua to bed 30 minutes later than usual. He cried for under 30 minutes, with us going back to check on him in 3, 5, and 10 minute intervals. It broke my heart...and then he stopped crying and fell asleep at 8pm! He woke up at 9pm, and we restarted with 3 and 5 minutes, and he fell asleep before the 10 minute check! His next waking was at 4am, just whimpering. I breastfed him, put him back down. He cried for 1 minute and woke up at 7:30am!
Not saying that it will be as easy tonight or it's the solution for everyone, but I was really discouraged by all the negatives on here regarding crying-it-out/Ferber. It would have been nice to read a few success stories. Hope this helps someone...the hardest part for us was to make the decision to do it!
